LITTLE TURKEY - Joseph Raymond Barloon, 72, Little Turkey, died Monday, May 6, 2002 at his home of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9 at Assumption Catholic Church, Little Turkey with Rev. John Moser celebrating the mass. Music for the service was provided by Verda Mikota as organist and Coleen Busta and Harlan Mikota as vocalists. The pall was placed on the casket by his wife and children. The offertory gifts were presented by Jennifer, Joseph and Ryan Barloon. Ken Barloon was the Lector. Mass servers were his grandchildren, Shane and Jessica Barloon.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Little Turkey with his six sons serving as pallbearers. Military rites were presented by the Lawler Redman American Legion Post #279 and the Alta Vista Paul Johann VFW Post #4089.

Visitation was 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 8 at Huge-back's Protivin Funeral Home, Protivin, where there was a 4 .m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. cripture Service. Further visitation was from 8-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Joe was born April 6, 1930 in Little Turkey, the son of Frank and Anna (Riha) Barloon. He attended Utica #7 country school near Little Turkey. On Feb. 6, 1952, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corp. where he served until being honorably discharged on Feb. 5, 1954. On April 27, 1955 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville, he married Alice Kuhn. Together the couple farmed and raised their family on the Barloon farm where Joe was born and currently lived. Joe was a Turkey Valley School Board member for 13 years where he also served as president, a director of the Iowa Association of School Boards from 1979-1982, a director on Farm Credit Services, a member of the Federal Land Bank, a lifelong active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey, Pheasants Forever, the Lawler Redman American Legion Post #279 and the Alta Vista Paul Johann VFW Post #4069. Joe enjoyed fishing, visiting with friends and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; six sons, Keith (Anne) Barloon, Burlington, Ken (Kathy) Barloon, Altoona, Denny (Cindy) Barloon, Donny (Carol) Barloon, Gary (Connie) Barloon and Jerry Barloon, all of Little Turkey; one daughter, Janet (Brian) Gage, New Hampton; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Delores (Lynn) Schwade, Cresco and Helen Wenthold, Calmar.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Edward Barloon Sr. and Arnold Barloon.
