Daniel Frederic Steck, democrat, Ottumwa, Ia. Born in Ottumwa December 16, 1881. Educated in the public schools and the State University of Iowa, graduating in law with the degree of LL.B. in 1906. Admitted to the Iowa bar. Engaged in the practice of law in Ottumwa. Married June 30, 1908, to Lucile Oehler. Served in the World War from July 1, 1917, to May 30, 1919, in the United States and in France. Elected to the senate of the United States November 4, 1924, and seated after a contest with Smith W. Brookhart. Active in the affairs of the democratic party in Iowa for many years.


Smith W. Brookhart, republican, Washington, Ia. Born in a log house in Scotland county, Mo., February 2, 1869. Moved in early life to Jefferson county, Ia., and in 1882 to Van Buren county, Ia. Educated in public schools, graduating from Bloomfield high school and Southern Iowa Normal, then located at Bloomfield. Taught country school and worked on a farm. Later was principal of the Bloomfield high school. Read law while teaching. Admitted to the bar in 1892 and located at Washington, where he has since been engaged in the practice of law and in farming. Elected county attorney in 1894 and again in 1896. Resigned in 1898 and volunteered in Spanish-American war. Member of Iowa National Guard since 1894, except about five yeras. Second lieuten, Fiftieth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Spanish-American war; major in Mexican border service; major and lieutenant colonel of infantry in World War; chief instructor in marksmanship in Camp Perry and Camp Benning schools; captain American Palma Rifle Team 1912, winning world championship; president National Rifle Association of America. Married Jennie Hearn, June 22, 1897, and has a family of four boys and two girls. Elected to United States senate in 1922 to fill unexpired term of Senator Kenyon. Lost in contest for seat with Daniel F. Steck following election in 1924. Re-elected in 1926.
