Immortalized Cousins
By Cathy Labath
From the History of Henry County,
Iowa Vol. I by Henry County Bicentennial
Commission, 1982. Article by Ann Farrier.
"When she was a young woman Anna [Mabel Crane Whiting (1867-1959)] and her
brother Ralph Knowlton Crane (1879-1946)] posed for a tintype which Harriet Ketchem used when making drawings for a monument commemorating Iowa soldiers
and sailors in the Civil War. Anna became an older pioneer woman depicting
History, while Ralph was the young Iowa. Their figures are on one side of
the 135 foot monument created by Danish sculptor Carl Rohl-Smith which stands
on the south lawn of the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines."
Anna and Ralph Crane were my second cousins three times removed.
