Post Office-Lowell. Edmond Archibald, P.M.

LOWELL is the only village in this Township. It gives the name to the Post Office, and contains a population of 160. It is
situated on the banks of Skunk river, in the southern part of the township, in section 28. It is the voting place of the
township. There are no Churches in the place, and but one school house. There is a large flouring and saw mill in the
village, owned by Brown & Co. One Hotel. There is a good crossing and ferry at this place.
The township is one of the oldest settled in the county, and contains a population of 734 persons. It is well watered and
has a great abundance of timber.

There are no villages in this township. The elections are held at Stewart's Farm. The number of inhabitants at present are
235. The township is being rapidly settled by a moral and energetic people. The land is nearly all prairie, and gently
undulating. One branch of Big Creek rises in the central portion of the township, and flows off in a south-easterly
direction.

MT. PLEASANT is located in this township. The population, outside of the City limits, numbers 1493. The timber and prairies
are about equally divided. Water privileges are abundant. Skunk river touches the south-west corner, and Big Creek circles
through the central portion from north to south. Any quantity of good building stone is found in the banks of this Creek.
Coal, also, has been found in several places in the township.

This Township is one of the finest in the county. It is well settled by a population of industrious and thrifty farmers.
Skunk River meanders through the township from the northwest corner to the southeast. Boyle's Mill is situated on this river,
in the south-eastern corner of the township, and is the most important place in the township.
The Keokuk, Mt. Pleasant & Muscatine Railroad runs through this township from south to north.

MARSHALL is the only village in this township. It has a population of some 250; one good church, a school house, and three
stores. Is a place of considerable business. The township is timber and prairie about equally divided. The land is rich
and well adapted for farming purposes.
