First entry in the minutes of the church book, which
mentions the original members of the congregation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Agreeably to presbyterial appointment, I preached at the house of James P. McCulley near Winfield on the 16th of October, 1865, and after public worship proceeded with the assistance of John Ferguson, elder, to organize a congregation, which was named the U. P. Congregation of Winfield. The following named persons were included in the organization: James Brown, Mrs. Willis (Joseph Willis’ mother), Mrs. J. L. Servis, Robert Walker, Mrs. Walker, Martha Jane Walker, Rebecca McCulley, George McCulley, Mary M. McCulley, James P. McCulley, Nancy McCulley. The elders elect were James P. McCulley and Robert Walker. Afterward, agreeably to appointment, I moderated in a call which was unanimously in favor of Rev. J. M. Henderson. On the 30th of October, the day appointed for the ordination of the elders elect, I preached and Messrs. Dr. Robinson and G. T. Aulders, elders appointed by the Presbytery being present, session was constituted by prayer, and after due examination of the elders elect, they were solemnly ordained to the office of ruling elders in the congregation, after which session was closed with prayer and the congregation dismissed with apostolic benediction.
