CIVIL WAR VETERANS MONUMENT – WINFIELD-SCOTT TOWNSHIP CEMETERY

 

The citizens of Scott Township were the first to honor their heroes with a monument. From “Mount Pleasant Home Journal”, October 20, 1865:

“C.B. Minshall is contracted for the erection of a monument to the memory of the brave soldiers from Scott who have offered up their lives in defense of our country. Good for the people of Scott. Let other townships follow the example. The monument is to cost $300, and the amount was raised by individual subscriptions. We hope someday to see a magnificent monument erected by the people of the county in the court house square in Mt. Pleasant, in honor of the brave dead from Henry County.”

Located in the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery, the monument was dedicated May 1866, honoring twelve Civil War soldiers. Names of the men:

COOPER, Ephraim
b. Ohio, Company F, 17 Regt.
Killed at Jackson, Miss., 16 May 1863

MORGAN, Daniel
b. Ohio, Company F, 25 Regt.
Wounded & Died at Nashville, Tenn., 17 Jan 1863
Aged 23 years

McCAFFERTY, George B.
b. Ohio, Company G, 11 Regt.
Died at Wilmington Hos, N.C., 7 March 1865
Aged 25 years

MICKEY, William H.
b. Iowa, Company F, 25 Regt.
Killed at Atlanta, GA, 12 August 1864
Aged 22 years

MARKLEY, T.J.
b. Virginia, Company F, 25 Regt.
Died in Hospital at Milliken’s Bend, LA, 1 June 1863
Aged 22 years

MILLER, M. Jay
b. Ohio, Company G, 11 Regt.
Killed at Atlanta, GA, 22 July 1864
Aged 24 years

GAMBELL, Sylvenus C.
b. Ohio, Company H, 25 Regt.
Died at Vicksburg, Miss., 12 Feb 1863
Aged 23 years

SKINNER, Joshua
b. Ohio, Company H, 25 Regt.
Died at St. Louis Hospital, 4 March 1863
Aged 32 years

MANLOVE, John H.
b. Ohio, Company G, 11 Regt.
Served 3 years, honorable discharged
Killed near Lafayette, Ind., 31 Oct 1864
Aged 24 years

SERVISS, Lorenzo P.
b. New York, Company K, 19 Regt.
Killed Prairie Grove, Ark., 8 Dec 1863
Aged 20 years

SERVISS, George B.
b. Michigan, Company A, 1 Michigan Cav
Died at City Point Hospital, Va., October 1864
Aged 18 years
