On the side of his stone it reads " The forerunners of western civilization and founder of Salem, Henry County, Iowa" and in smaller print " Sacred is the dust of the Christian pioneers who sowed the seeds of our prosperity and happiness and paved the way to our national greatness."
This monument was erected in 1885 by his children (many years after his death) and enclosed in a iron fence. It might have replaced a much smaller stone. He came to the Salem area in 1835 and choose the spot for the town which his son Aaron Jr and son-in-law helped lay out.
