Kennedy Brothers Garage and Ford dealership
Logan, Iowa
Kennedy Brothers Garage was operated by Frank Kennedy, my grandfather, and his brother, Wilbert. The building is now the Baptist Church.
Frank Kennedy and Lena Surber were married in 1902 in Woodbine and moved to Logan. His father Joshua Kennedy was a farmer in Harrison County, and when he sold his farm he set his sons up in business and gave his daughters an equivalent amount of money. Joshua's father, Charles, was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1791, and he, his son, Joshua, grandson's Frank and Wilbert, and wives and other relatives are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. Frank became director of two banks in Logan in the 1920's, but they failed in 1928. He was able to pay off his debts and moved to Falls City, opening up a burial vault business. He died in Falls City in 1946. His wife, Lena Surber Kennedy died in 1937. Her mother, Nancy Maria Surber, died in Logan in 1916 and is buried in the Logan Cemetery. Frank and Lena's home in Logan is diagonally across the intersection from the Methodist church. My father, Ival Kennedy, and all of his siblings were born in Logan. He graduated from Logan HS in 1928 and was an apprentice printer at the newspaper. In 1926 or 27 he saved a boy named Lynn Graybill from drowning in the Boyer River. He was a Boy Scout and received the highest commendation from the Boy Scouts of America.
