WOODBINE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH
HISTORY AND MEMBERSHIP, 1923
History of the Woodbine Church
It is just seventy years since the first Methodist class was organized in Harrison county. It is beyond the power of anyone to give a complete history of its growth in that time, for who but God knows the whole harvest of seed sown or can measure its growth and influence?
The early history of the Woodbine church is closely related to that of the county. Different records show some slight variations in the first dates but in the main they are alike. The first sermon in the county was preached by William Simpson in 1851. The meeting was held in the home of Kirtland Card, a brother of Mrs. Martin Kibler, in the vicinity of Harris Grove. In 1853 a class was organized with Mr. Thomas Reeder as leader. Rev. Wm. Scott was appointed to take care of the work. At this time the first Sunday School was organized in the county. It was conducted by Mr. Stephen King and Kirtland Card. It is related that neither of these men were professed Christians at that time, but observing the need of a better training for their children, started the Sunday School. It was said that there was no one who would open the school with prayer.
The Woodbine class was organized in 1857. The members were Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Cole (Mrs. Cole later became Mrs. Diana Snyder), Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hushaw, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Mendenhall, Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Moore and Mrs. A. Johnson. The meetings were held in the old schoolhouse near the home of Dr. and Mrs. Cole, which is now part of the property of George Pugsley. Mr. Hiram Moore, who had a license as a local preacher, had charge of the class under Rev. Rush and other ministers of the circuit. The Methodists of the entire county were served by one pastor. They could not support him alone so appropriations were made from the mission fund.
Rev. Scott was relieved in 1857 by Rev. Rusk and he was followed by Rev. Rand, Rev. Farlow, Rev. Conrad, Rev. Adair, Rev. Findley, Rev. Coe, Rev. Calfee and in 1869 by Rev. W. W. Glanviel, who was a great pioneer preacher. During his pastorate the old frame church was built in 1869. At this time the circuit included what might be called the central part of Harrison county. Our first authentic church records show it to consist of Dunlap. Lynwood schoolhouse, Harris Grove and Woodbine. The first trustees were Samuel DeCou, M. Winters, Dr. Crosswait, Joseph Clizbe and Dr. Cole.
Rev. I. M. O'Flyng came in 1870 and during his ministry Dunlap was taken from the circuit and made a charge. He was followed in turn by Wm. E. Hamilton, T. P. Newland, John Elliot, J. S. Stevens, W. R. Douglas, W. C. Smith, J. D. DeTar and M. A. Wright. In 1882, during the pastorate of Rev. Douglas the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society was organized by Miss Elizabeth Pierson. At least four of the charter members are living.
A few excerpts from our conference minutes published at that time, show us that Methodism was growing. During the pastorate of Rev. Smith in 1883, a scourage of scarlet fever broke out and the church was closed but the conference minutes say, "The long and stormy winter was a test of the faith of ministers and churches but great revivals were held all over the district. Many churches have been blest, among them Woodbine." Again, "Under the efficient management of Rev. M. A. Wright, the church in Woodbine is in the best condition in its history. Church too small for the congregation. Salary all paid, etc." After a gratifying revival a young peoples' prayer meeting was formed with Frank M. Smith as leader. The next pastor was G. C. Waynick. The church was in a prime condition for the building of a better church. In the words of this pastor taken from the historical record, "The work opened out encouragingly, the congregations increased and the interest grew." On November 18, the pastor began a series of revival meetings and the Lord was in the work from the start. These meetings continued for six weeks and resulted in 86 conversions and 58 additions. When the services were closed, the pastor began at once to plan for a new church building, and though the times were very hard on account of a recent bank failure in the town, the efforts for a new church were successful. The cost complete was $7,081. The church was dedicated by Bishop Thos. Bowman on October 27, 1889.
The district conference was held in the new church immediately following its dedication, and Rev. C. M. Ward, who was later appointed to preach here, was in attendance. He afterwards said that at the conference he could not help but think that the people were unwise to build such a large church. During his own pastorate it was filled to its capacity time and again.
The next few years witnessed some spendid efforts on the part of the church and community in enforcing our temperance laws. They were successful in closing an "original package saloon" which was in existence at that time.
During the five-year pastorate of C. M. Ward, the church had a great growth. A revival meeting in 1894, with Rev. Jesse Underwood as evangelist, resulted in 120 conversions, 90 of whom united with our church on probation. In 1895 a union meeting under the leadership of the much loved Frank T. Pierson fairly shook the town. A large number were converted, and 40 persons united with our church on probation.
The parsonage home at that time was the home now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Jones, which is located on Seventh street between Lincoln Way and Walker streets. In 1895 the adjoining lot was added to the parsonage property.
In 1896 Bishop Bowman again visited us to assist in raising the debt still remaining on the church. He secured a pledge of $1100 and later in the year the church was free from debt.
In August, 1896, Rev. Wm. A. Main, who was a member of our conference, was married in our church to Miss Emma Little. The ceremony was performed by our presiding elder, Rev. Hooker. Rev. and Mrs. Main left immediately for Foochow, China, to serve as missionaries.
During the next ten years the church was served by H. H. Barton, G. P. Try, Enoch Hill and C. N. Dawson. Four of these years were under the pastorate of Rev. Hill, whose devoted life and service linger in our memories. Twelve pastors have served us since then.
Beginning with the service of D. V. Ninde in 1906 and continuing for a period of several years, the Epworth League grew to be the largest and most active in the district and the young peoples' work was a great blessing to the church.
During the pastorate of Rev. M. M. Cable the present parsonage property was rebuilt as it stands today.
The project of building a new church was begun when Rev. St. Clair was our pastor. The enterprise had gained promising proportions when the plans had to be abandoned because of the World War. The adjustment of church activities to meet the needs during and after the war has filled the time up to the present. Rev. J. F. Bingaman served the church from 1917 until 1919. He was followed by Rev. J. L. Boyd who also served us for two years. Rev. H. G. Parker, our present pastor, came to us in 1921.
This scant review of the history of our church gives but an idea of the labors and sorrows, victories and failures of the church and its ministers. Our church has gone from a membership of nine to more than four hundred. Little has been said of the many faithful ones who, throughout the years, have held up the hands of the ministers and maintained the church until our present day. All of the charter members have gone on before, Mrs. Diana Snyder being the last to leave the church she loved. To them, the noblest monument we can erect, is a church that in some measure fulfills their vision of the ideal church in Woodbine.

We believe this is the same church as the current Woodbine United Methodist Church, as it was/is located at 6th and Lincoln.
