JOHN HANNEMAN Hard and laborious work was the lot of John HANNEMAN during his youth and early manhood. In this respect, however, it was no different than the lot of other boys of his day and generation, but his fidelity to duty has won for him the respect and the confidence of those with whom he has been thrown into contact, and by patient continuance in well doing, he has gradually risen from an humble station to his present standing as a progressive farmer of Harrison county. He has worked his way from a modest beginning up to a considerable prominence by his efforts, and he is thus highly worthy and deserving of praise which is accorded by him by his neighbors.
John HANNEMAN was born May, 24, 1861, in Magnolia township, Harrison county, Iowa. He is the son of Henry and Mary (Huff) HANNEMAN, and one of four children born to his parents. Henry, the eldest, is a hardware merchant at Magnolia, Iowa; Mrs. Catherine SCHUELTKZY, is a resident of Nebraska, one who died in infancy, and the fourth and youngest is the subject of this review.
Henry HANNEMAN was born in 1829, in Germany, and when a young man he left his native land and settled in the state of Pennsylvania. Later he came to Illinois, and subsequently, in 1855, he moved to Harrison county, Iowa, where he purchased land in Magnolia township. This he farmed until about 1900, when he retired from active life, and made his home with his children until his death in 1913, in Nebraska. His wife, mother of Mr. HANNEMAN, was born in Germany in 1819, in Germany, and died in 1892. She was reared on a farm and attended the district schools of Magnolia township after coming to this country with her parents.
Mr. HANNEMAN was born in an old log cabin, which still remains standing on the place. When he reached his majority he began farming for himself. He rented land from his father for about nine years. He then purchased sixty-five acres of land which he improved, and to which he added from time to time until he now owns two hundred and ninety-five acres, thirty acres of which is covered with natural timber. This farming land is located in Calhoun and Magnolia township.
John HANNEMAN has the old home place, where his brothers and sisters were born, and where he himself was born.
Mr. HANNEMAN was married in 1884 to Minnie UNMACK, who was born on October 12, 1866, in New York state. She is a daughter of Henry and Minnie (SCHULER) UNMACK, who came to Harrison county, Iowa, in the seventies. Both her parents were natives of Germany, and both are now deceased. To this union two children have been born, John. Jr., who is farming on the old home place, and Bertha, who married Walter STIRTZ, a farmer of Magnolia township.
Mr. HANNEMAN has been the recipient of important political honors, having been elected trustee of Calhoun township. He was an ardent Republican, and a believer in the principles established in this country by the immortal Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. HANNEMAN are members of the Evangelical church, take an interest in the work of their denomination and contribute liberally to its support. Both Mr. and Mrs. HANNEMAN are looked to as substantial citizens of the community, a couple who have made life more pleasant in the vicinity of their home.Return to 1915 Biographical H Surnames Index
