Margaret Jane Boyle
Born 2/21/1851 in Steamboat Rock, Hardin Cty, IA
Married 6/8/1887 in Algona, Kossuth Cty, IA to Lewis Edwin Smith, son of Milo
and Caira Chamberlin Smith of Will Cty, IL and Humboldt Cty, IA
Died 9/23/1955 in Eckert, Colorado
Raised in Steamboat Rock and then moved to Livermore, Humboldt Cty, IA about
1872, married in Algona, but returned after a short while to Livermore where she
and Lewis were active members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. About 1900
the family moved to Spirit Lake, Dickinson Cty, IA and from there to Delta Cty,
CO in 1907. Family tradition states they relocated to Colorado because of Lewis'
asthma and at the invitation of their former minister Reverend Frothingham who
had moved to Delta, CO to head the First Presbyterian Church there. They settled
in Surface Creek Valley in the now abandoned village of Colby, and then moved by
1930 into a small house on an acre and a half of land in the village of Eckert,
CO.
Margaret and Lewis were primary organizers and contributors to the establishment
of the Eckert Presbyterian Church, and were among those whose labor and money
built a very charming church and manse, still very much in use, from local
volcanic rock.
Margaret and Lewis had three daughters:
Echo Margaret born 7/20/1888 in Algona, IA
Edna born 10/10/1889 in Hardin Cty, IA
Ethel born 8/8/1891 in Hardin Cty, IA
Echo married Frank Reed Burritt in 1923 and had one daughter Margaret Lucile,
who was my mother
Edna married Dewitt McCormick in 1913, had a son Keith, and daughters Lois, Echo
Leota, and Ruth. Edna, Dewitt, Echo Leota, and Ruth all moved to Seattle, WA
Ethel married a man named Mathis (George I think) but with whom family tradition
says she lived but a short time. They had no children, and Ethel also moved to
Seattle.
Margaret Jane was the daughter of:
WILLIAM BOYLE
born 9/5/1825 in Ohio
married 11/5/1854 in Hardin Cty, IA to Mary Esther Stout daughter of Franklin B.
Stout of Franklin Cty, IN and Hardin Cty, IA
died 2/5/1874 in Eldora, Hardin Cty, IA
Moved to Clay township, Hardin Cty, IA about 1849, and is recorded living there
in the 1850 Federal Census with sisters Margaret and Keziah.
He had a brother Hiram who died young, and brothers Sam and Charles born in
Pennsylvania. Charles was another early resident of Clay township in Hardin Cty.
He had, as well, sisters Eleanor Kiser, Isabelle Moore, Margaret Parker, and
Keziah Goodell.
Stout family tradition states William was related to Hugh Boyle of Ohio, of
which there are at least three by that name circa 1820-50 in Ohio
Smith family notes state William's father was a school teacher in Ohio and that
his mother was born in Ireland
