Pleasant Chapel Cemetery, Pleasant Township, Section 28

Pioneer Cemetery

aka Duke Cemetery

Located 1 mile west of Lawn Hill on blacktop, State Hwy D55, 1 mile north, P Ave, 1/4 mile east on 270th St., 1/2 mile north on PP Ave. 26657 PP Ave is the Pleasant Chapel Church and cemetery is on the west side of it.  John T. Duke of Hardin Co. in consideration of  $1. payment  by S. L. Hubbard, L. D. Farland, H. Miller, Eli Mossman and L. C. Smith trustees of the Union Methodist Church Society hereby convey and sell the following premises, consisting of 2 acres more or less. On 24 Aug 1872 as per the warrenty deed in the Hardin County Deed Book # 33, p. 194.

Gravestones of 4 of John Duke's children are in the cemetery, and one for his 2nd wife, Mary E. Marlowe Duke, who died in 1871.  The eariles stone found was for David Miller, born in 1770 and died in 1852.

This cemetery is fenced and well maintained. The Pioneer Cemetery Comm.. put up a new wooden sign in June of 1999.

The  small, one room church stands beside the cemetery. The story goes that when the men of the area were working on the foundation of the church in 1861, the call came for volunteers for the Civil War. Many of them dropped their work  and rushed to Dubuque to join the Army.  Four years later they returned to finish their church and discovered trees growing within the foundation, these were cleaned up and the church was finished.  Although regular services are no longer held, it is used for special events, even a wedding now and then.  An old fashion Christmas program is also an annual event there.

The records for the cemetery are kept by Marcia Daggs, 1105 8th Ave., Eldora, Iowa 50627
