Ellsworth Cemetery, Eldora Township, Section 20
Pioneer Cemetery
aka Bailey CemeteryAbandoned, last burial prior to 1914.
Travel south of Eldora on Hwy. #215 to the first road to the left, Then go one mile east and 1/2 mile north. Located at 24651 Y Ave Eldora township. This old burial plot is located under the trees in the back yard of the home of Rick Steinfeldt off to the westside of the road where it starts an S curve. (Rick now maintains this cemetery keeping it mowed and free of brush. For many years it was forgotten and overgrown with an occassional clean up effort from a local service group. It was a fenced in weedpatch in the middle of the pasture with an occasional steer checking out what was behind the fence.). It is one of the early pioneer cemeterys in Eldora Township.
Orginally on land (section 20) claimed by Jonathan Conger, who sold his claim to William Bailey. Mr. Bailey built the log cabin near his residence (built in 1853) that became the first school house (built in summer of 1853) in Hardin County. The school house also served as the Cumberland Presbyterian Church with servives preached br Rev. J.R.Lowrance another early settle to the township. On the west side of it you can plainly see the ruts of the old stage coach road which traveled from Marshalltown to Eldora and beyond. The land has been in the Carl Steinfeldt family for some time, prior to that it was owned by Sibley Moran. This cemetery is abandoned. There are at least 30 graves there, but only 5 stones that are still in tact and upright, can be found, there are 5 or 6 more that are there but lying on the ground or broken.
