The earliest settlers set apart what is known as the old cemetery, located in section 13, and the first interment was that of Mary Ann Meyers which also was the first death in Alden township. The Alden Cemetery Association was organized in 1878 and additional land was purchased adjoining the old cemetery and planted for cemetery purposes. The first interment in this cemetery was that of Walter Massey who was drowned in the Iowa river June 9, 1878.
