Post 431 (19) My 17, 1887 Desc. Book: was student when enl., age 20. "Mr. Robertson served throughout the entire war & participated in many important battles. The first winter was spent in Jefferson City & then southward to Shiloh, Corinth, & Memphis & on to Vicksburg siege for 40 days. He went with Sherman to the sea & back to Richmond & in the grand Review at Washington D.C. After the war he began to study medicine at Morning Sun, Ohio. He came to Williams & started practicing his profession in 1875 & remained there until his death. He was a brave soldier, honored citizen, kind physician, beloved husband and abiding friend. |

Cav & during the war was frequently in command of either a battalion or a regiment. He was promoted for gallantry at the battle of Winchester & the Wilderness. He was in command of 25 troopers who carried dispatches for Gen Grant. Mr. Tallman was the captor of Maj. Harry Gilmore, the famous Baltimore officer whom he had chased for 3 days & 3 nights. In pursuit of Gen. Early, Mr. Tallman recovered field dispatches and official papers which he kept during the rest of his life." |

Van Ness, a pioneer settler of Hamilton Co was a native of Ohio & from that state he enl in the war. He served in the army of the Cumberland & was for a time attached to the staff of the army in the field and thus was given opportunity to meet & sometimes to measure, some of the noted men of that day. After the war he located in Tipton, Cedar Co, Ia & resided there until 1882 when he came to Hamilton Co. After the death of his wife in 1895 he went to Oklahoma & remained there until his death. Mr. Van Ness was a man of great intellectual attainments and in all the varied activities of a career, he never lost his desire for knowledge & hence his mind was always young. A rare collection of Indian wearing apparel, beads, etc. was given to Kendall Young Library. This collection was made by Mr. Van Ness in the early days & some of the articles date back to very early Indian times." |
