Lake Center - This hamlet was in the center of Clear Lake Township,
and took its name from that location. It is listed in the postal records
as having a post office in 1851, but it has never appeared on any U. S.
maps. It did appear on a state map dated 1860.
Lake Center was located in NW/NW Sec. 22-86-25 of Clear Lake Township. A
Lutheran church and the Clear Lake Cemetery are located in NW Sec.
16-86-25.
At a later time, when the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad was preparing
to come through the lower part of the county, the post office called
Lake Center was moved to NW Sec. 3-86-25 on Sept. 18, 1876, with William
O. Covel serving as postmaster. By this time the post office was nowhere
near the center of the township, but it was given the same name anyway.
The post office was closed on Sept. 8, 1884.
