The cemetery is
located near an old stagecoach line from Story City to Webster City and was
first plotted by Edward Fox in 1903 as the cemetery for Liberty Township. Many
of the early pioneers of Liberty Township are buried here.
It is a well kept, pretty cemetery, but does not have a name sign.
Surrounding the cemetery is a grove of trees with pine trees along the
east fence line. There was not
a church associated with the cemetery.
The
cemetery occupies 3 acres. The
entire three acres is plotted, although only the front half of the cemetery is
used for burials. The back half of
the cemetery has been allowed to return to native prairie which was burned off
in the spring of 1985 to give the wild flowers a chance to grow.
The cemetery is
plotted in East-West rows starting with lot #1 on the northeast (Hwy 69) side of
the cemetery and continuing east to west; then west to east until 6 rows have
been completed. There is a driving
path in the middle of cemetery with 3 lots on each side of the path.
There is one grave in
the back portion of the cemetery and is marked only by a natural large field
rock. The rock is located in lot
#24, in the Northwest corner of the cemetery.
The grave is rumored to belong to an infant with the last name of
Preston. No record can be found
about this burial, except for the original notation on the cemetery plot.
The native prairie grasses have been allowed to grow around the stone.
The cemetery was
walked and photographed October, 2009 by Jackie Frederick.
This list was transcribed from the township record for the cemetery.
