JOHN GARVEY IN MEMORIAM

Born November 12, 1888 - Died at Great Lakes Training Station March 14, 1918.

John Garvey died at the Great Lakes Training Station, Chicago, Thursday, March 14, after an illness of eight days of pneumonia.  His mother was with him when he passed away and accompanied the remains to the family home at Oran.  He enlisted last October and would have sailed for France in April.

The funeral was held in the Immaculate Conception church Monday, 10 a.m. Rev. J. Halpin read the mass and delivered a fine sermon on patriotism, and his address will long be remembered by all who heard him.  He has always taken an active part in all patriotic movements.  the large church was filled and many could not gain admittance.  The altar rail and gallery were appropriately decorated with flags and bunting.

The G.A.R., W.R.C., Red Cross Directors, Camp Fire Girls, Mayor and City Council all attended in a body.  Business was suspended and both schools attended the service.

The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.  After the religious ceremony at the grave, the W.R.C. burial ritual was read.

John Garvey was born November 12, 1888, at the family home 6 1/2 miles northwest of town and is survived by his father, mother, four sisters and three brothers.  James Garvey is at Camp Dodge but all were present at the funeral. - Fairbank View
