Mary Emaline Forney

Mrs. Mary Emaline Forney daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Keran was born April 10,1873 at Brighton, Washington County, Iowa and passed away January 22 at the age of 79.

She was one of a family of eight children and all the others preceded her in death.

July 21,1891 she was united in marriage to Washington Forney at the bride's home with Joseph Flair Justice of Peace officiating. Three daughters were born to them, Mrs. Flora Stanley and Mrs. Will Kimsey of Thurman. Miss Sylvia Forney who died at the age of 16 years, besides the two daughters, she leaves eight
grandchildren thirteen great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Funeral services were held Sunday (25 January 1953) at the Thurman Methodist church with Rev. R. A. McManus in charge. Interment was in the Thurman cemetery, Reeves Funeral Home of Tabor was in charge.

Rosa Pierce

Rosa Pierce, daughter of George W. Pierce and wife was born September 7,1872 near Bartlett, Iowa and grew to womanhood in Fremont County, Iowa. She passed out of this life on Monday evening about 5 P. M. June 30,1952 at the age of 78 years , 9 months, and 23 days.

On November 27,1889 she was united in marriage to Leonard E. Forney at the home of his parents by Elder William Leeka. Unto this union were born five children: Edward Forney who died in 1918; Mrs. Cora Boldra of California; Guy Forney of Tabor; Mrs. Marcia Mincer of Hamburg, and Mrs. Mary Boldra of Randolph, Iowa.
Early in the nineties the family moved by team and wagon to Custer County, Oklahoma where the three youngest children were born, and while living there both Mr. and Mrs. Forney became members of the Mound Valley Congregation of the German Baptist Brethren Church of Thomas. They lived in Oklahoma about eleven years then returned to Fremont County , Iowa and bought a farm north of Thurman. They lived there until the health of Mr. Forney became so poor that they left the farm and moved to Randolph, Iowa and later moved into the comfortable home of their youngest daughter Mr. Mary Boldra who lovingly cared for them.

Mr. Forney died April 9,1951 and Mrs. Forney who had been in poor health for about five years failed rapidly after the death of her husband, and as her ailments became more acute, it became quite a problem for her widowed daughter to properly care for her and take care of her duties as Postmistress of the Randolph Post Office, therefore on Sunday, June 22,1952 at Mrs. Forney's request she was taken to the Good Samaritan Rest home in Tabor, Iowa where she spent her few remaining days and where she passed out of this life.

She leaves her four children and their families, consisting of 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren, also one brother who with many other relatives and friends mourn the loss of a good faithful wife, a devoted mother and a good friend of all who knew her.

Funeral services were held on Thursday , July 3, at 10:00 A.M. at the Reeves Funeral Home in Tabor and were in charge of Wm. Lee of Elliott, Casket bearers were Herschel and Eden Boldra, Vies Bownes, Scott Kempton, Herman Greenwood, and C. Gearhart. The soloist was George Schoemaker with Mrs. Allison Boldra pianist. the songs were Resting Sweetly Resting, and Beyond the Sunset. In charge of Flowers were Mrs. C. A. Gearhart, Mrs Marie Taylor, Mrs. Scot Kempton, Mrs. Viles Bownes, Mrs. Bernice Godman and Mrs. Jack Williams. Interment was in the Thurman Cemetery

William H. Wyant
 

William H. Wyant, a long time resident of Scott Twp, died Monday morning (10 Aug,1931) after a long illness, He was 67 years old. Funeral services were held Tuesday ( 11 August, 1931) at 2:00 P. M. at the King School house , with interment in the Thurman, cemetery.
William Harry Wyant was born October 24,1863 at Marshalltown, Iowa and died Sunday night at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Kearns. He spent a few years in Missouri and the rest of his life has been spent in Iowa, Mostly Fremont County. He was married to Mezada{Navada} Pierce at Anderson, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Chas. and Eva died when small children, Edna Kearns a few years ago. Two sons Earl and Lester who with the mother and fourteen grandchildren mourn his going. Mr. Wyant has been in poor health for a number of years and all summer has been a severe sufferer with heart trouble. When a young man he unite with the Methodist church and ;later was a member of the Christian Church at Bartlett. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday (11 August, 1931) by Rev. Chas Aitken from Kings Chapel with interment in the Thurman Cemetery.

Robert Pierce

Bartlett Farmer Drowns

Robert Pierce, a young farmer living two miles southwest of Bartlett, was drowned while bathing in the Missouri River at noon Sunday. Willie Kimsey, a boy about 10 years old , who has been making his home with Pierce, was with him at the time of the accident, which occurred while Pierce was sitting in the stern of a rowboat fastened to a tree. In some way he slipped off into the water, which was about ten feet deep and with a swift current. He was a poor swimmer and unable to grasp the boat or reach a willow which leaned over the water near him. When the news was given circulation a large crowd gathered which proceeded to the scene of the accident, but not before a large number of his neighbors were there. They obtained a fish net and dragged the river for half a mile but failed to find the body. Mr. Pierce leaves a widowed mother. He was a hardworking man and had a crop of fifty acres of corn. He was well known, having lived in that vicinity for a couple of years.

Man Drowned Near Bartlett

Robert Pierce, a young man aged about 25 or 30 , was drowned last Sunday in the Missouri river at a point several miles southwest of Bartlett. He was the only son of a widowed mother and lived near the edge of the river with her. He had been in the habit of bathing in some Shallow back water near his house, but could not swim. This time the water was deeper that he had expected, the river being high. The water proved to be about 12 feet, deep and he disappeared and was drawn into the main current. The body has not been found as yet.

Mabel Mildred Campbell

Mabel Mildred Campbell, was the daughter of John and Sarah Weight, She was born in Brownsville, Nebraska on February 14, 1898, and was one of family of ten children. Her childhood was spent at Nishnabotna, MO. On May 22,1915, she was united in marriage to Alvy R. Campbell. eight children were born to this union. They farm north of Thurman until 1946 and then moved to Pacific Junction, where she was living when she passed away.

The morning of January 18,1960, she passed away in the Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of sixty-one years.
She is survived by two daughters, Mr. Edith Howser, of pacific Junction and Mrs Thelma Butler, Omaha, Nebraska, four sons Charles T. weight, New Hall, California, Arthur D. Campbell, Pacific Junction, Iowa, Wilbur R. Campbell, Omaha Nebraska, and Clarence E. Campbell, Pacific Junction, thirteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren., six brothers Edward E. Weight, St. Joe, MO, Winfield Weight, Napa, California, Henry W. Weight, Bellevue, Nebraska, John F. Weight Pittsburg, California, Arthur W. Weight, Plattsmouth Orval Weight, Napa, California, and two sisters, Pearl Forney, Thurman, Marie Ball, Napa California.

Her husband Alvy, two sons, Ralph and Clifford and one daughter Idelia, preceded her in death.

 John William Pierce

John William Pierce was born August 18, 1864 near Bartlett, Iowa and died at his home January 23, 1940 age 75 years, 5 months and 5 days. He was married to Rosilla Keran on October 12,1888 and to this union eight sons and four daughters were born. One son and two daughters preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, seven sons and two daughters, Paul, John and Mrs. Bertha Clapper of this Neighborhood, Raymond, Luke, Thomas and Buryl at home, Warner at Lincoln, Nebraska, and Mrs. Katy (Opal) Welchen of Riverton. He also leaves sixteen grand children and two great-grandchildren. Two brothers Joe and George and three sisters, Mrs. Rose Forney, Mrs. Nevada Wyant and Mrs. Lily Weston of Nebraska City. Mr. Pierce had spent his entire life in this community, and his cheerful smile and kind disposition made him a friend to all who knew him. A kind gentle father who will be missed in his home.

Funeral services were held at the king Church Thursday with Rev. Charles Aitkens as minister. Three favorite Hymns “Home over there” “shall we meet beyond the river” “rock of ages” were sung by Paul and Esther Rosentrater.

Pallbearers were: Will King, Clarence Forney, Frank King, Grover Isom, John King and Floyd Forney.

Clifford L. Pierce

Funeral services for Clifford L. Pierce 70, a former resident of Thurman, were held (22 March 1971) at 2 P.M. at the San Diego, California, Marvin of Omaha and Robert of Newton. Two brothers, Omer and Clayton of Platttsmouth, Nebraska, and Mrs. Mabel Hatcher of Pacific Junction.

Mr. Pierce died Friday (19 March 1971) at his home in Pacific Junction.

Ira G. Clapper

Services for Ira G. Clapper Lapper, 83 were held Friday (May 7, 1971) at 2:00 p. m. at the Crawford Funeral Home with the Rev. Irving Mitchell officiating. Duet numbers
were sung by Robert and David Crom, with Mrs. jack Ewalt the organist

Pallbearers were Leonard Worcester, John Brandt, Dale Forney, Merrill Heard,Jerry Van Scyco and Vernie Aubrey. Mrs. Eber Brandt had charge of the memory book. Interment was in the Tabor Cemetery.

Ira George Clapper one of seven children born to Christian William and Mary Burtiss Clapper, was born on June 9, 1887 Northwest of  Thurman. He attended school at Dutch Hollow. He spent his life in the Fremont County area, working on farms until retirement.  He was married to Bertha A. Pierce on November 13, 1907. To this union four children were born. Mrs. Clapper passed away 1948. Ira later married Dolly Shaft, who passed away a year ago [1970].

Surviving are three children, Essie of Sioux City: Aleta of Eldora and Ross Granite City, Illinois;15 grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren, two great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services for Paul Pierce, who died of burns suffered in a fire on Monday night, January 24, at his home near Bartlett were held on Friday (Feb. 28, 1966) at 3:30 P.M. at the Crawford-Reeves Funeral Home with the Rev. Irving Mitchell officiating.

A duet number was sung by Mrs. Darrel Banatta and Mrs. Donald Douglass, accompanied by Mrs Dan Haggard. The pallbearers were Truman Lorimor, Clark Rickabaugh, John Meads, Chester Forney, Kenneth Rickabough and Jerry Van Scyco.  

In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Russell Curtis, Mrs. Scott Kempton, Mrs. Cecil McCollum, Mrs. Chester Forney and Mrs. Clark Rickabaugh.

Interment was in the Thurman Cemetery.

Paul Pierce was born on November 3,1901 at Thurman and passed away from this life at Nebraska Methodist hospital in Omaha on January 26,1966 at age of 64.

He was united in marriage on December 16,1922 to Hilda Evelyn Hammers . To this union three children were born, Norman of Malvern , Rex of Shenandoah and Cleland of Sidney.

He was preceded in death by his parents , two brothers and two sisters.

Left to mourn his loss are his wife, three sons, eight grandchildren, four brothers, Raymond, Luke, Tom and Buryl all of Bartlett, and one sister, Mrs. Sylvester Welchans of Riverton, nieces, and nephews and a host of friends and relatives.

Paul spent his entire life farming in the Bartlett  community and was loved by all who knew him.

PEARL FORNEY BAIN

TABOR---Funeral for Pearl Forney Bain, 96, of Tabor, a former Glenwood resident, will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Crawford-Marshall funeral Chapel in Tabor with the Rev. Lauris Meek and the Rev. L. dean Surface officiating.

Mrs. Bain died April22 at Tabor Manor Care Center after a long illness.

She was born Feb. 18,1904 in Nishnabotna , Mo , to John Weight and Sarah (Dew) Weight.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Glenwood and worked for many years at the Glenwood State Hospital-School, where she held many jobs including child care worker, head dietary cook, and most recently foster grandparent.

Mrs. Bain was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Forney.

Survivors include a sister, Marie McDowell, of Grants Pass, Ore; four grandchildren , seven great grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in the Thurman Cemetery.

Memorial may be offered to the First Christian Church in Glenwood.

GLEN WEIGHT little son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weight died Monday morning (20 Feb. 1933) of bronchial pneumonia after an illness of sixteen days. He would have been eleven months old the 2nd day of this month. Mr. and Mrs. Weight reside north of Thurman.   

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon (21 Feb. 1933) at one o'clock at the Kings Church and burial was in the Thurman Cemetery.

Mrs. John Weight

Long time Bartlett citizen buried at Thurman Monday (December 9,1935) after a prolonged illness with hear trouble and complications which made her condition very uncomfortable.
Funeral Services were held at the King’s chapel Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Chas. Aitken. Singers were Mrs. Lee German, Mrs. Oran Davidson, Mrs. Charles Wright and Mrs. W. A. Reeves. Burial was in the Thurman Cemetery.

Mrs. Weight was a native of Shelby County, Iowa born May 11,1869. She was married to John Weight July 19,1889, and to them were born eleven children, all of whom are living. They are Edward of St. Joseph, John of Plattsmouth, and Winfield, Henry, Arthur, Earl, Orville, Thomas, Mrs. Marie Forney, Mrs. Mabel Campbell, and Mrs. Carl Forney, all living in the Bartlett community. She is also survived by two sisters and 25 grandchildren.
