Mrs Earl Standish, the divorced wife of the young bank swindler of Pomona, Cal., who is serving a term in San Quentin penitentiary was married the 8th of June to Fred Whittaker of Yuma, Arizona.

Earl Standish lived in Locust Grove until almost grown, and has many relatives in this section.

After the swindle, together with his wife, they visited the scenes of his childhood, his wife being dressed as a boy. Shortly afterward they returned to California, where he gave himself up. Mrs Standish said that the blame rested largely on her and that she would find some employment and await the release of her husband. On the day she was married to Whitaker a petition was forwarded to President Wilson, signed by the officials of the bank which he robbed and many of the citizens of the town, asking for his pardon.

LOCATING GRAVE

Mrs M.V. Maulsby and daughters, Mrs Sylvia L. Hunt of Modac, Ind., and Mrs Lida Simcoke of Stuart, Iowa arrived last Thursday, the object of their visit being to locate the grave of Mrs Maulsby's first husband, Charles Macy, in the Hamburg cemetery, and erect a suitable monument.

Mr Macy was drowned in the Payne slough, north of town, thirty-seven years ago Wednesday, while trying to come to town to do some trading and get the mail. The water was high at the time and nothing was known of the drowning until he did not return, when a hunt was commenced, H. Brown and John Chapman were among those who assisted in finding the body.

Considerable trouble was encountered in properly locating the grave. Mr Macy was among one of the first to be buried in the local cemetery and since that time the lots have been re-plotted and numbered with assistance the ladies were able to find the place of burial and a new deed was issued and the monument erected....

TOEDT, FREDERICK W.

Frederick W. Toedt, one of the pioneer businessmen of Hamburg, passed away quietly at his home on Park street on the morning of July 4, following a year of intense suffering. On June 9 an operation, which offered the only hope of relief, was resorted to, but in vain.

Mr Toedt was born in Wittenbarg, Germany, May 16, 1843, emigrating with his parents to America in 1852, and settled in Herkimer county, New York. At the outbreak of the civil war Mr Toedt offered himself for service to the government, enlisting for three years. He experienced hard service, taking part in many battles. In 1868 he came to Stuart, Iowa, where he embarked in the hardware business, remaining there until 1875, when he moved to Hamburg, entering the same line of business. He was one of our foremost businessmen, and always took an active part in the life of the town. In 1897, on account of failing health, he was compelled to retire from active work, selling his business to his son-in-law, J.F. Riedy.

Mr Toedt was married to Miss Lillian Lunt in Stuart, Ia., in December, 1874, and to this union two children were born, Mrs J.F. Riedy and Miss Sadie. Fred, as he was generally known, was a well known figure on our streets up until his last sickness, and his cheerful ways won him many friends. The interment was private, at his request.

H.E. FUGITT

On Wednesday about noon occurred the death of H.E. Fugitt of Omaha at the Cottage Inn, following an attack of acute alcoholism, the immediate cause of death being heart failure. It was seen sometime before his death that life would not long remain in the body, and everything possible was done to relieve him.

Hiram Edward Fugitt was born on the old homestead, four miles east of town, on September 6, 1859, having arrived at the age of 54 years, 9 months and 12 days. He was married March 19, 1890 to Nettie Duncan of Atchison county, Mo., she preceding her husband to the grave, the date of her demise being April 27, 1908, at the home near Thurman. To this union two daughters were born, Frances dying at the age of five, and Miss Margaret. Mr Fugitt lived on the old homestead of his father, Townsend I., for several years, and afterwards conducted the farm from Hamburg. On selling the place he moved to Thurman, where he owned land, and lived there until some three years ago, when he took up his residence in Omaha. Besides his daughter he leaves two brothers: William C. of Riverton, John F. of Kansas City, and a sister, Mrs Sarah McClelland of Omaha. The body was removed to the J.F. Baldwin home on Wednesday afternoon, where a short funeral service was held on Thursday at 11 a.m., conducted by Rev Theo. J. Asmus, after which the body was taken to Thurman, where another service was held and the body laid to rest beside that of his dear wife.

Ed was a man of many good qualities, a friend to all but himself, and his loss will be keenly felt by his family and many friends. He had many charities that people knew nothing of, and to those whom he befriended a deep sorrow has come.

ELIZA JANE BARNETT

She was married to Edward Barnett in March, 1869, and to this union two children were born, namely, Mrs Henry Lloyd of this city, who recently passed away, and David Barnett of Fairfax, Mo., at whose home she died. The deceased was a member of the Christian church having been received at the age of 14 years. She had also been a member of the Royal Neighbors for the past seven years. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband and son David, besides a host of friends and relatives. The funeral services were held at the Christian church Saturday morning, July 4, at 10:30, conducted by Rev B.H. Coonradt, and interment was made in the Hamburg cemetery.

The body of little Wade Chaney was brought here from Minatair, Nebr., Monday for burial. The funeral services were held on the J.H. Kellison lawn by Rev H.G. Stewart and the interment was made in Mt Olive cemetery.

On Friday Mesdames Jeff and Will Chaney and two children, Wade and Paul, decided to go over to the govenment camp and see the work being done on the irrigation dam. On the return trip they cut across an alfalfa field and had to cross a small ditch. The team had crossed many times, but this time one horse stopped a moment and then leaped over the ditch. Dump boards were on the wagon, and when the horse lunged it threw the occupants forward onto the tongue. Little Wade and Mrs Will Chaney were caught in the rig in some manner and were dragged some two hundred yards. The mother was fortunate enough to come out without serious injury, but Wade was killed instantly. Mr and Mrs Will Chaney have the sympathy of the entire community in their loss.

Mrs Frank Derrickson of Farragut returned from England Monday. She has been visiting her mother and other friends there for the past three months. People are still wearing their winter coats. And the fog this time of years is not noticeable."

Her mother, Mrs Greedy, lives at Wivelscande, England, and is 77 years old. This town is about 30 miles from Liverpool. Mrs Derrickson says it took seven days on the water going to Liverpool and only five coming home. The water was very rough on the way over.
