FRANK O'CONNOR NO MORE |
After an illness extending over many months Frank O'Connor passed away on Saturday evening, August 15, at 7 o'clock. Mr O'Connor was one of the early settlers in this territory, and was about eighty-one years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Ireland, and loved to tell of the times he had when a boy herding cattle in the old country. He had large holdings on the bottom and was a heavy loser in the flood of '81. Some time after this he purchased the place near town which has since been his home. Frank never married, and had one sister in this country. His niece Marion O'Rourke, has made her home with him for several years, and was kind to him in everyway. Maud O'Rourke and Mrs George Gahan of Montreal, Canada, have also been here during the summer. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church Tuesday morning and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. |

DR HOOVER PASSES AWAY |
Hamburg has met with a loss in the death of Dr C.E. Hoover, a man of many parts, and one who filled his place in the world and performed whatever duties came his way without complaint. During the years he has lived in Hamburg he has been a prominent figure in the life of the town. He was not of the show-off class, and many are the things which he has done for the betterment of conditions in the town only known to a few who might be connected with him. In his quiet way he won many friends who were loyal to him under all circumstances. Dr C.E. Hoover was born near Centerville, Ia., Nov 17, 1857, and died in the hopsital in Omaha, Neb., Aug 21, 1914, aged 56 years, 9 months and 4 days. He was educated in the college in Oskaloosa, Ia., and graduated in 1879. He came then to Fremont county, Iowa teaching school for several years, and then took up the study of medicine, and in 1886 graduated from the medical college in St Joe, Mo. He located in Kansas, and after five years came to Hamburg, Ia., and has lived here ever since. He was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Holtzinger April 25, 1883. He was converted at the age of 21 and united with the Christian church, but on coming to Hamburg joined the Methodist Episcopal church, and at his death was a faithful member of the same. He was an affilated member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges, always trying in his life to practice the teachings of these helpful associations. He also was a member of the Yeomen lodge and the State Medical association, also the Fremont County Medical association and the Knights and Ladies of Security. He leaves three brothers and one sister, together with his good wife and her family and a host of friends to mourn his death. The Doctor was a good citizen, a conscientious and faithful physician, a kind and affectionate husband and a sympathetic friend, especially to those in need. For some years his health was poor, and often he was hardly able to attend to the arduous duties incident to his profession. When it became evident that he must undergo an operation he arranged all of his business affairs, and then told his wife that he was ready to go if anything should happen. He made a great fight for life and loved ones. All was done that medical skill and careful nursing could do. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at four o'clock, conducted by Rev. A.A. Walburn, assisted by Rev. M.R. Brower. The services at the grave were in charge of the Masonic and Odd Fellow orders. NOTE: a nice picture of the doctor accompanies this obituary. |
