The Twentieth Century Club was founded in Buffalo, New York. In 1894, clubs sprang up across the country. During a time when women were not allowed to vote and were barred from many professions, the club aimed to foster women’s personal and intellectual growth by advancing the study of education, literature, and the arts. Essays written by members on historical or current events were often presented at meetings, along with socializing and home cooked meals.
