Bertha was born in 1885, in Riverton, to John James Smith and Emma Winkler. She married Charles Ahlstrand, born 1885, in Sweden. They had one child, John Douglas Ahlstrand 1910-2001. Bertha died in Omaha between 1940-1950, and Charles died in 1950 in Omaha, Nebraska.
