Sarah Elizabeth Iler was born in 1839 in Platts County, Missouri to Henry Iler and Martha Wilson. She had 4 sisters and 2 brothers. In 1859, she married John Clark Chaney (1834-1916) in Atchison County, Missouri and they moved to Riverton. She died in 1932 in Riverton and is buried in Utterback Cemetery with her husband.

She had 10 children; Nellie Mae, Mary Loretta, Estelle, Berty, Rosalie, Nancy Charlotte, Martha (Mattie) Elizabeth, Nicholas, Harve and John Henry.
