PASSING OF A
GOOD MAN
~~~~
Elmer A. Wilcox passed away early Saturday morning at his home,
following an illness of about two years. During his many weary days
of suffering Elmer was always cheerful, and took things as they
came, never complaining. He lived his life in Hamburg, and was
always found four square in all his dealings and was held in the
highest respect by all. Although of a quiet disposition, his
influence was a force in the community, and will live on as a
benediction to him.
Elmer A. Wilcox, son of Eli and Maria Wilcox, was born near Hamburg,
July 17, 1865 and died at his home here on March 26, 1932, aged 66
year, 7 months and 29days. The larger part of his life was spent in
Hamburg, where he worked as a clerk in hardware, lumber, jewelry and
grocery businesses. In October of 1929 the condition of his health
was such that he had to retire from active work, and since that tome
has been closely confined to his home. During the years of his
suffering he always showed a patient Christian fortitude.
He
united with the M. E. church at this place twenty-five years ago and
was a member of the official board at the time of his death, and his
church has suffered a distinct loss. He was an honored member of
the I. O. O. F., the Encampment, Rebekah, and Modern Woodman lodges.
Elmer Wilcox is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Fisher, of
Burwell, Nebr., and Mrs. Emma Ralla Ryerson, of Detroit, Mich., and
by a niece, Mrs. Mabel Smith, of Burwell, and a nephew, La Verne
Ryerson, of Detroit. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday
afternoon from the M. E. church, in charge of his pastor, the Rev.
John Zuck. Interment was in the Hamburg cemetery, services at the
grave being in charge of the Rebekah and Odd Fellow lodges. |
