The photo above, originally one of Don Turner's unidentified pictures, has been identified by Ron Holland as Benjamin Thomas Foley. Ron was scanning family pictures from an old album. One of the photos was identified as his great-great uncle, Benjamin T. Foley. Ron did a search for the photographer and was surprised to see his gg-uncle on the Franklin co. IAGenWeb site among the unidentified pictures. Ron writes: "Benjamin Thomas Foley, born September 21, 1863 in Apple River, Illinois, and died October 21, 1928 in San Diego CA. He never married. Why or when he was in Iowa to have his picture taken, I don't know."

Don Turner speculates that his g-grandmother Clara Carpenter may have known Ben Foley because she was born in Council Hill, IL, right down the road from Apple River : "At some time in her youth, Clara Carpenter and her sister went with their friends, the Penalunas, to Iowa. The Penalunas had relatives in Hampton. It's possible that other friends made that trip too, including Ben Foley. That might explain the picture. He looks about the right age to have just finished school, so maybe a lot of the kids went west to visit."
