After his retirement he worked for St Luke's Hospital in the laundry department He was born April 14 1904, in Paris, MO, and married Myrtle Goodall on Oct 5, 1925, in Tipton. He was a member of Mizpah Lodge 694, Teamsters Union Local 298 and Olivet Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Michael Chamberlain of Olivet Presbyterian Church will officiate. General: Marvin R. West was born in Paris, MO in 1904. He moved with his family to West Branch, IA in 1908. After finishing eighth grade in school he went to work on a local farm to help support his seven brother and sisters. Here he learned first hand about the dairy business, hand milking a herd of cows, cooling and preparing the day's milk for the trip to town. Little did he know that he would spend the rest of his life in the dairy product industry. Marvin moved to Cedar Rapids, IA in 1919, working at the "Pinick & Ford Starch Works" and then at the "Rock Island Railroad" roundhouse. At a chance meeting of an employee of the "Wright Brothers Dairy" while walking along third Avenue West, he found that there was an opening for an honest, hard working young man to deliver milk, house to house by horse and wagon. He hurried over to meet with Mr. Wright and was able to convince him that he wanted the job very badly. Mr. Wright soon found out that Marvin had experience handling horses, so he was also given the task of tending the horses after hours for a few extra dollars per week. Marvin later started working inside the dairy at various jobs in the processing of the milk products. He spent almost forty-seven years in the dairy business, becoming proficient at every job within the plant. The Wright Brothers Dairy eventually was sold to the Blue Valley Creamery Co., and Marvin stayed on as one of the faithful employees during the depression years. Things were tough but there was a pay check coming in each week to feed the four young West kids at home. Many happy times were spent as a family, going to Company picnics, watching Dad and others play softball, and free basketball games at Quaker Oats. Blue Valley was later sold to the Redel family from Minnesota. A new plant was built to the north of the existing plant and the grand opening of Sanitary Farm Dairies was held in 1939. Life long friends who had worked together, both at Wright Brothers and Blue Valley, continued on with Sanitary for a number of years. Marvin West retired in 1969 at age 65 after spending almost 47 years putting dairy products on the tables of Cedar Rapids residence. Military Honors by the West Branch American Legion. Barker Funeral Home was in charge General: Uncle John was born in Monroe CO, MO and came to IA with Grama and Grampa West when they settled in West Branch in 1908. After he finished school he went to work for the Werzbaughers on the farm and there he met Margaret. She graduated from the University of Iowa and became the librarian at the West Branch Library. The library was located next to Grama and Grampa West's house on Main St in West Branch. The library backyard was the favorite place for the West family pictures for weddings, funerals, Thanksgiving, Christmas, family reunions or whatever. Uncle John and Aunt Margaret began a lifelong romance. Both were very quiet, hard working people, devoted to each other. At the start of World War II, Uncle John was drafted and sent to Camp Polk, LA for basic training. Because of his work on the farm and his familiarity with handling and caring for horses, he was assigned to the Army Cavalry. The Army realized that mounted cavalry soldiers were no longer required in modern warfare so Uncle John's outfit was converted and became the mechanized cavalry equipped with tanks. They were shipped overseas and entered the war in North Africa. He did not talk much about his war experiences. ( I will send for his military records to give a more accurate account of his years in the Army.) He went through battles in Italy and fought in the battle of the Bulge. Somewhere along the way he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart and other Military decorations. Cousin Jack Vincent has mounted his metals for display on the wall. After the war Uncle John and Margaret picked up where they had left off and were married 27 Oct 1946 and moved to a farm about nine miles southwest of Iowa City located on Highway 1 between Iowa City and Kalona. They subsequently purchased the farm and lived there until Margaret's death. Here they worked together and became active and well liked in the surrounding community. Aunt Margaret passed away in 1977. Uncle John continued to farm awhile but finally retired and moved to Kalona and then to West Branch to be near sister Roberta and family. He and Aunt Margaret were very successful at farming. They did not have any children of their own so they decided when Uncle John passed away in 1992, to share the fruits of their labor with nieces and nephews. Uncle John and Aunt Margaret are buried at the West Branch Cemetery overlooking the town where their courtship began and where we recall many very happy occasions. In her own quiet manner, she is always doing a good deed for someone. She sang in the girls' glee club for two years. As a junior she was a very efficient member of the library staff. Idell will be remembered as the "housewife" in last year's public speaking play, "Dead Men Can't Hurt You". She also did her share in helping produce "Be An Optimist". Her future is undecided although she may take a business course. W.B.H.S. sends "best regards" to her.
