Although his mother remarried three years later, the family never had more than the bare essentials of life After receiving a limited education Mitchell began to learn the wagon maker's trade at which he worked at Cadiz and Unionvale in Harrison County. It was probably while he was working at Cadiz that he met his future wife Sarah Foster. They were married 9 April 1846 by the Reverend John Rea of the Beech Spring Presbyterian Church and continued to live in Harrison County until 1854. Of six children born to them there, three died in infancy. In 1854 Mitchell Reed moved his family to the boundless prairies of Iowa. They packed their meager belongings into their wagon and set off for Wheeling, West Virginia, where they boarded a steamboat for the journey down the Ohio River and then up the Mississippi to Keokuk, Iowa. There they hired a man with a team to take than to Kirkville in Wapello County, Iowa A few miles from their destination, at Eddyville, Mitchell's wife, Sarah, was stricken with cholera. Few people survived this dreaded illness, and for several days she was not expected to Live. They had secured quarters in a hotel, but the owner soon found himself with quarantine on his building. The family was delayed there about two weeks, but Sarah Reed did recover. They finally reached their new home in Kirkville, Wapello County where they lived until 1859. By l856 however, Mitchell Reed was looking westward again. This time, accompanied by a brother and a cousin, he walked from Kirkville to Page County, Iowa, a distance of about 175 miles. While In Page County he purchased two tracts of Land of 90 end 40 acres each. The 90 acre tract was on the northern limits of the town of Braddyville, and the smaller tract adjoined it on the northwest. The land was selected for its valuable timber which could be used to make wagons. Mitchell returned to Kirkville and in the spring of 1859 moved his family to Braddyville. The new land was heavily timbered so the family rented a farm southwest of Braddyville until a home was finally built on their own land in 1863. The rented farm on which they lived for a time was on the Iowa state line and was heavily patrolled during the Civil War. Mitchell's son William once traded a loaf of homemade bread for a border so1dier blue coat. They became fast friends and marched the sentry duty together White farming the rented land Mitchell Reed was busy clearing his own purchase. He used some for the lumber in his wagon making and much of it went into their new home which he worked on when be had the time. He finally finished the story-and-a-half structure and moved his family there in the fall of l863. The house burned in 1909 and a new one was built on the same site. The new farmland was not entirely cleared; by the time the family moved there. Gradually more and more of it was planted each year, but Mitchell's time was primarily taken up with wagon making. He was an expert in selecting the proper timber and knowing when to cut it. It was an exacting trade and Mitchel1 was quite successful in it. He relied on his sons to help with the-work on the farm while he built wagons. Although William worked at wagon making with him for while none of his sons ever pursued it an as occupation. Mitchell Reed was greatly respected in the Braddyville community. He was one of the trustees of the Braddyville Methodist Church at the time it was built and also served as a steward. He was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party. Perhaps the best description of Mitchell and Sarah Reed is the recollection of their granddaughter, Mrs. J. F. Bening. In a letter to the compiler she presents the following remembrance: "As a small child I well remember Grandfather and Grandmother Reed. He was always quiet and good natured, Grandmother was small arid plump. She had dark wavy hair and always played up to the whims of children, I had many a good times with her. After she was gone he stayed on at the old home. Some of the Reeds have lived there continuously. Grandfather died on the sane day my youngest daughter was born." "During his last days he lived very quietly. Until the very last he took long walks to the Nodaway River. Then he had his bees. When he emptied the hives of honey the grandchildren who happened to be around were much amused. He put on a broad brimmed straw hat and over this he draped mosquito net. It hung down over his shoulders. Then he beat on a tin pan and proceeded to remove the honey. I never could get the connection, but he got it done without a sting. All of us received a gift of honey." "He always went to the M E. Church on Sundays, always wore a Prince Albert coat, and always came in a trifle last." Mitchell Reed lived another 18 years (after Sarah's death)and died 1 March 1911 at his home in Braddyville Following funeral services in the Methodist Church he, too, was buried in the peaceful knoll that is the Braddyville Cemetery. Today the farm would bring $500.00 per acre or more. The farm lies about 1/2 mile north of Braddyville on Highway #71, and belongs to Lloyd REED, a grandson of Mitchell REED. «b»«i»Biographical History of Page County, Iowa«/i», Lewis & Dunbar Publishers, 113 Adams Street, Chicago, Illinois, 1890«/b» «b»MITCHELL REED is one of the few remaining old settlers of Buchanan Township; his father, Samuel Reed, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and a pioneer in Harrison County, Ohio, where he owned a farm. He married Mary Shannon, daughter of Isaac Shannon, of Jefferson County, Ohio, and to them were born six children: Samuel, Jane, Isaac, Mitchell, John and Thomas. Mr. Reed died in Harrison County, Ohio, when his son Mitchell was a mere lad, so that he has no distinct recollection of his father. The mother afterward married Andrew Clark, who also died in Ohio, and she then removed to Clarinda, Iowa, and resides with her son Samuel. Mitchell Reed was born February 27, 1827, on his father's farm in Harrison County, Ohio, and received a limited education in the primitive log school-house of that day. At the early age of nineteen years he married Miss Sarah Foster, a daughter of George and Jerusha (Workman) Foster. They are the parents of eight children: Samuel F., Sarah J., William D., Emmett P., George W., Frank E., Mary E. and Thomas M. Mr. Reed worked at the wagon-makers' trade in Cadiz, Ohio, and also at Union Yale, Ohio. The tide of emigration being westward, in the year 1855 he decided to remove with his family to Iowa; he settled in Wapello County, Iowa, and remained there three years; at the end of this period he came to Page County and settled in Amity Township, where he lived another three years, and then located on his present homestead of 180 acres; it is excellent farming land and is peasantry situated one-half mile from Braddyville. Mr. and Mrs. Reed are worthy members of the Methodist Episcopal Church; Mr. Reed was oneof the trustees at the time the church was built, and he has also fulfilled the office of steward. Politically he affiliates with the Republican party, and is a strong supporter of its principles. Mr. Reed's oldest son, Samuel F., married Catharine Nichols; Sarah J. is the wife of Hugh C. Armstrong; William D. married Lydia J. Martin; Emmett P. married Ida Morrow; Frank E. married Clara Sanders: Mary E. is the wife of Robert Johnston; George W. married Flora Robinson. Mr. and Mrs. Reed have twenty-three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, the grand- [page 745] child of Samuel F. Reed, and the child of his daughter Eva R., who married George Gruver. The descendants of this old pioneer of Page County are distinguished as a large and flourishing race of people. Mr. Reed is a man who has always lived an honorable, upright life, and has brought up his family in the paths of rectitude and virtue. He has the entire confidence and respect of his community and his whole family are held in high regard.«/b» ================================================================================ General Notes: Wife - ================================================================================ From: THE ANCESTRY AND DESCENDENTS OF MITCHELL REED AND HIS WIFE, SARA FOSTER WITH NOTES ON SOME RELATED FAMILIES. 1967 by Arthur Reed Armstrong __________________________________________________________ Sarah Foster Reed died 26 February 1893 at their home in Braddyville. The following obituary appeared in the Clarinda Herald 1 March l893: "Mrs. Mitchell (sic) Reed expired at 6 p.m. on the 26th surrounded by all of her children but two, and numerous kind and sympathetic friends. Mrs. Reed has been a great sufferer the last four years. She bore her sufferings with Christian fortitude but for the Last four weeks all hope of her recovery has been abandoned, and her children gathered in from far and near to receive her last token of love and farewell. Her end, like her life, was peacefu1 and she gently dropped to sleep. She was 67 years old, and leaves a husband and six grown sons and two daughters to mourn the loss of wife and mother. Mr. and Mrs. Reed have been residents of this place near 30 years and their friends are numbered by hundreds, all of whom extend their deepest sympathy to this bereaved family in this great loss. The funeral services were held on Tuesday at the M. E. Church in Braddyville, conducted by Rev. A B. Buckner, who delivered a very able and appropriate discourse. Her remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives, and at 12 o'clock she was laid to rest…." Last Modified: 24 Jul 2011
