Box 1851 Portland, OR 97207 (503) 287-9684 says: "I have copies from the National Archives of Alma's Civil War records and later widow Elizabeth's pension application which includes her marriage record and births of the younger children. MILITARY: Alma Harmon enlisted on the 13 Oct 1862 in Co. A. 4th Regiment Iowa Volunteers [Alma Harman] DEATH: Military Burials Glenwood, Iowa 1834-05 Feb 1881 Co A. 4th IA Inf. CW-GAR BURIAL: Alma Harmon from "Graves Registration Service," State Capitol in Des Moines, Iowa. It says he was born in 1834, died Feb 5, 1881 at Glenwood. This record says his wife's name was Elizabeth and that he had a son, Elmer. He enlisted Oct 30, 1862 at Davenport, Iowa; discharged Feb 4, 1865. He was a private in Co. A., 4th Iowa Infantry. Burial at Glenwood. On the back of this record of Alma Harmon was an interesting story -- " On Friday, May 24, 1935, a group of Legionnaires from Glenwood, Iowa, in the presence of County Coroner, F.H. Raynor, who represented the State Board of Health, moved the body of Harmon from Potter's Field. Only the handles of the casket were found, but the entire bone structure, which had reposed in its earthen bed for more than fifty years, was found to be intact. The bony fingers of the skeleton were crossed over the body just as the hand had been folded in earth's last sleep. Although all traces of the garments were gone, the buttons remained in position on the framework and a bow tie was in position around the neck. These material remains of one who had once offered his life in the service of hisnation were reverently assembled, placed in an appropriate box and buried in a place of honor in the G.A.R. plot between two of his comrades. A government headstone has been placed at his new grave." Notes for Elizabeth SCOTT HARMON: BIRTH: 1880 Census gives her birthplace as Ohio; her father b. NY and mother in KY Her death certificate gives her birth date as 14 Mar 1839. Family records have April. DEATH: obit for Mrs. Elizabeth Harmon -- "A resident of Glenwood many years, died last week at Estherville, Ia., where the family moved several years ago. Survived by 6 children at Estherville and son, Elmer, north of Glenwood.": ref: the Mills county Tribune, Glenwood, Friday, Feb 3, 1911 There is a tombstone for Alva Harmon in the Glenwood cemetery. No stone for either Elizabeth or Margaret Harmon. Notes on Francis Marion HARMON: BIRTH: Listed as a child of Alma Harmon, deceased, in probate packet of Grandmother, Huldah Bassett of Cache County, Utah. She died 12 Oct 1886. He was 30 years old and residing at Glenwood, Iowa at the time his sister wrote a letter on 5 Jan 1891. She stated that he would be age 33 on 13 Mar 1891. This clearly puts his birth year as 1858. Since he was born in March, that makes his birth prior to his parent's marriage. The letter was written by Matilda Olena Harmon next in age to Francis Marion. She gives her own age as age 31 on 30 Nov 1890. This makes her birthdate: 30 Nov 1859. If Francis Marion were born in 1858 AFTER his parent's marriage, there would only be 8 1/2 months between the births of the two children which is highly unlikely--ESPECIALLY since one of the two children in question is the one who is giving the ages and birthdates. In light of this information, I am using the 1858/59 birth year in my records to give the benefit of doubt either way. DEATH: Cause of death: Cancer Notes on Matilda Olena HARMON: BIRTH: Listed as a child of Alma Harmon, deceased, in probate packet of Grandmother, Huldah Bassett of Cache County, Utah. She died 12 Oct 1886. She was 29 years old and residing at Glenwood, Iowa at the time. She would have been 26 according to our records. The following letter was sent to the probate court in Logan, Utah with the children's ages. This letter was written by second daughter. I noticed that the letter was written in 1891 and not in 1886 at the time of Hulda's death. That would count for the discrepencies in the dates/ages of the children that we have been dealing with. This letter was among the documents of Huldah's probate file: 5 Jan 1891 Glenwood, Iowa Dear Sir: ...My father Alma Harmon died 5 Feb 1881 leaving 7 heirs: [the year seems to be year they reached stated age] Francis Marion Harmon age 33 13 Mar 1891 Matilda Olena Harmon age 31 30 Nov 1890 William Henry Harmon age 28 1 Oct 1890 Elmer Scott Harmon age 25 10 Feb 1891 Curtis Homer Harmon age 20 5 May 1891 Emma Jane Harmon age 23 10 Jun 1891 Celestia Evalin Harmon age 15 15 Jul 1891 None of them are married. (must have been meant to be 3 months) See his father's notes for census. DEATH: Clarence was still alive 19 Mar 1881 when his mother applied for a Widow's pension from Mills Co., Iowa. Clarence was not mentioned at all and presumably not alive at the time his sister sent a letter to the clerk of probate of his grandmother, Huldah Bassett 5 Jan 1891. At that time, his mother and some of his siblings were residing at Estherville, Emmet, Iowa while some of the other siblings were at Glenwood, Mills, Iowa.
