Documentation and Sources:

I have a wonderful treasure that belonged to my g-g-grandmother. She gathered samples
of hair from 130+ members of her immediate and extended family; the hair was plaited
or bound with ribbon and sewed onto the pages of a small journal. Listed in that book
are Charles and Elinor Friend. I had no idea who these people were, but assumed from
their placement in the book, that they were members of her mother's Tucker family.
So... I started looking and am now confident that Elinor was her mother's sister,
one who was previously unknown to family researchers.
After I located their marriage and tracked the family to Iowa, further information
on the family has been pretty much limited to census records. I was sure that Charles died
ca 1858-1860 (no one who died prior to 1858 is in the family book of hair, and he is missing
from the 1860 census). WPA records confirmed that he died in 1858. Elinor was living in 1870,
but I have not been able to locate her on the 1880 census. It is probable that she died by
that time, but she is not listed on the WPA list of burials in the cemetery where Charles was buried.
It is possible she remarried between 1870 and 1880 and could be found under a different name.
I have a great deal of info on her ancestry.
At this time, I have not proved the parentage of Charles Friend, but he was surely connected
to Joseph Friend who purchased land adjoining that which was purchased by the father, brother
and brother-in-law of Elenor; the land was purchased in 1836 and lies in what is now Brown County,
Illinois (then Schuyler). This is probably the same Joseph Friend (b 1770-1780) who was listed
on the 1830 and 1840 census records of Greene Co., IL and Washington Co., IL, respectively.

Separate worksheets will be submitted for the families of some of the children of Charles and
Elenor, but I have only limited information on the rest of their children... too little to create
separate sheets for them. What I know is summarized below:

** Brice T. Friend - I believe he is the Brice Thomas Friend who purchased 40 acres (SWNE 1/4 Sect 32,
Twp 76N Range 29W) in Madison Co., IA on 1 May 1855. This land adjoined 120 acres purchased by Charles
Friend on the same date; both were residents of Jasper Twp at the time of purchase. Brice enlisted as
a private on 15 Aug 1862 (age 27, residence given as Fontanelle, IA and served in Co. D, 29th Infantry
Regiment Iowa. He died of disease 29 Jan 1863 at the regimental hospital in Helena, AR. I do not have
any information about a marriage or descendants.

** Phoebe Ann Friend (m John Miller); see separate Family Group Sheet.

** Ephraim Friend. He may be the Ephraim Friend who died 24 Dec 1879 and was buried in Roberts
Cemetery, Harrison Twp., Adair Co., IA. However, I was told (though have no evidence to support this)
that he and his wife were residents of Marion Co., IA.

** Miles B. Friend (m Nancy A. Roberts); see separate family sheet.

** Amelia J. Friend (m John Murphy). I have only information gathered from census records (below)
for her family. Her husband was surely the son of James Murphy (listed next to John and Rachel
on the 1856 census). Children of John and Amelia: Riley (b ca 1858) and Robert (b ca 1860).

** Rachel Friend (m Frances Marion McAferty); see separate Family Group Sheet.

** William A. Friend. I have estimated his birth ca 1846 and assume his middle initial is A. However,
his age fluctuates quite a bit on census records from 1850 to 1880, and on one, the middle initial is K.
-1850 US Census, Keokuk Co., IA - William A is 8, b IA [ca 1842]
-1856 State Census, Adair Co., IA - Wm K is 10, b IA [ca 1846]
-1860 US Census, Adair Co., IA - Wm A is 14, b IA [ca 1846]
-1870 US Census, Adair Co., IA - William is 22, b IA [ca 1848]
-1880 US Census, Adair Co., IA - Wm is 34, b IA [ca 1846]
He married Martha (nee?, b ca 1860 Arkansas) and they had at least one son, Earnest (b ca 1879 IA).

** Marshall B. Friend. I have not located him after he is found on the 1880 census as a 26-year-old
farmer, residing in the Harrison Twp., Adair Co. household of Andrew Haynes.

* The family can be found on the following census Records:
1840 Fed: Henry Co., Iowa Territory
1850 Fed: District 26, Keokuk Co., IA
1856 State: Harrison Twp., Adair Co., IA
1860 Fed: Harrison Twp., Adair Co., IA & Clay, Marion Co., IA
1870 Fed: Harrison Twp., Adair Co., IA
1880 Fed: Washington, DeKalb Co., MO

I would like to correspond with descendants from other members of this family and have information
to share on the ancestry of Elinor. -Jennifer
