John Duffee served in the 36th Iowa Infantry, Company E as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. National Archives yielded up John Duffee’s Civil War Records, which list him as being 27 years old when he joined the service as a volunteer, and describes him as six feet tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. It also tells that he was born in Hocking County, Ohio, and that his occupation was farmer. He enlisted for service on August 22, 1862 in Ottumwa for a term of three years. Remarks stated that he was at battles of Ft. Pemberton, Mar 11, 1863, Helena July 4, 1863 Elkins Ford April 4, 1864 Prairie D. Ann April 12, 1864 Camden April 15, 1864 and Marks Mills April 25, 1864. In the latter engagement was captured by the enemy, exchanged at Mouth Red River Feb. 25, 1865. Other documents show that there was a stoppage for Transportation H 1 + 32? Was Prisoner of War Tyler Texas from April 28 1864 to Feb 25, 1865. Stop for one Springfield R Musket accouterments H!
6.00 His muster out pay was $63.22. It also shows that he was paid a bounty of $25.00, and had an additional $75.00 owed to him. There are also two statements showing that he was on furlough in St. Louis, Missouri on April 14, 1865 and that $2.55 was charged against his pay account for transportation costs to Mouth White River, and that his rank was Private. Additional transportation costs of$3.57 were charged on his muster and pay roll for a furlough on April 12, 1865 for transportation costs to Ottumwa, Iowa.

John is buried in the Chillicothe Cemetery, along his parents, James and Elizabeth Duffee. We do not know the exact date of John’s birth in 1836, but his date of death was February 21, 1882, and his headstone is inscribed with his age as 46yr 11m 20d ss husband of M. Duffee. I have calculated his birthdate as on or around Mar 1, 1837 using the months and days on his headstone.

Margaret Jordan filed for a Civil War Veteran’s pension within a few months of her husband’s death. Her year of death is uncertain, as is her burial place. Records from the National Archives have been requested, to see if there is additional information about her available. I have not been able to trace her family in Illinois, and there is no trace of this family in the 1880 census. Unfortunately, the 1890 Census Records for Iowa were destroyed by fire, so no records exist.
