ELLIS, Ezra M.

Sudden Death of an Old Pioneer

The friends and acquaintances of that old pioneer, E. M. Ellis of Emmet township will be shocked to hear of his sudden death which occurred yesterday [2 Sep 1886]. He had been working around at odd jobs during the day apparently in as good health as usual, and was found dead near the house in the afternoon only a short time after the family had noticed him actively at work.

Mr. Ellis belonged to that sturdy class of pioneers peculiar to the western country, who did more than their share of labor in order to lay the foundations upon which future generations could build.

Born in New Hampshire nearly four score years ago, he came when a young man to Illinois in 1835 taking a claim in Cook county near where the suburban town of Maywood is now located. Twenty years later he opened up a farm in Linn county, Iowa, from thence removing to Fairbault county, Minn., thence with his family to this county in 1867. [He homesteaded land in Section 28, Township 100, Range 34 W.]

At the time of his death he was getting ready to go to the Pacific coast as he was suffering from a throat and lung difficulty and dreaded the approach of cold weather.

His death follows closely that of his wife who died about three months ago, and removes an old family landmark as the children are all away--two daughters living in Minnesota; one in Missouri; two sons and one daughter residing in Portland, Oregon; two sons in Dakota.

The funeral of E. M. Ellis was held at the family residence last Sunday, Rev. R. B. Whitacre officiating. But few of the immediate relatives could be present, several grandchildren and two daughters residing in Minnesota being all that could reach home in time for the ceremonies. [The burial took place at East Side cemetery.]

GRAFF, Henry G.

DIED ON THE TRAIN

Henry G. Graaf Died Near Council Bluffs at 5:30 Saturday Morning

HE WAS ON HIS WAY HOME

After Spending Winter in California
Death Occurred Almost Instantly
Remains Arrived Sunday
Funeral Today

This community was shocked Saturday morning by the announcement that Henry G. Graaf, a highly respected retired merchant of this city, had died on the train near Council Bluffs while on his way home from California where he had spent a greater portion of the winter. Mrs. Graaf was with him at the time of his death and they were occupying a double berth in the sleeper. It was 5:30 when Mrs. Graaf awoke and found him sitting up in the berth. She spoke to him but received no reply, then she put her hand to his forehead and found him covered with a cold perspiration. She got up immediately and spoke to him again, just as she did so he fell back on the bed and was dead. This was at Pacific Junction and the conductor stopped the train and summoned a doctor who pronounced his death due to heart failure. The body was taken to Omaha where it was embalmed and placed in a casket and accompanied here Sunday evening by Mrs. Graaf and three sons, Hermann, Henry and Charlie, who started immediately to meet their mother on learning of their father's death. Mr. Graaf had enjoyed a pleasant trip to California and was anxious to get home to see his children and tell of his enjoyable trip. At Kansas City he sent a telegram apprising them of the time they would arrive in Estherville and seemed in the best of health. After his death the conductor of the train told Mrs. Graaf that he had found Mr. Graaf about two o'clock in the morning sitting in the smoking compartment of the sleeper in his night robe and spoke to him asking if he did not feel well and replied that he could not sleep and thought he would sit up for a while. He soon returned to the berth, however, and the conductor heard nothing more until called by Mrs. Graaf.

Henry G. Graaf was born at Wesel, Prussia, in January 1845, and came to this country in 1860. He resided in Davenport for five years and then moved to Wilton Junction and engaged in the clothing business and remained until twenty-one years ago when he came to Estherville and opened a clothing store. In 1866 at Wilton Junction he was married to Margaret Swartz, who still survives him. To this union five children were born, Hermann G., Anna G. (who died five years ago), F. H., Charles W. and Etta L., all residents of Estherville except Charles W. who is engaged in the clothing business at Luverne, Minn.

From the beginning of Henry G. Graaf's residence in Estherville twenty-one years ago he had always been a prominent factor in the upbuilding of the city. He has been one of the strong financial men of the town and socially very popular. It was a pleasure to converse with Henry G. Graaf. His friends were numbered by his acquaintance and he always had a good word for his fellowman. He was a straightforward, upright and honorable citizen and his death is a sad blow to Estherville. He was a director in the First National Bank, the Armstrong State Bank, Winnebago State Bank and the Dolliver Savings Bank and is said to have been worth in the neighborhood of $70,000. He left a will but carried no life insurance.

The directors of the First National Bank, J. P. Kirby, M. K. Whelan, John Montgomery, E. I. Sondrol, E. B. Soper and O. Neville will be pall bearers at the funeral to be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Presbyterian church, Rev. W. M. Evans, of Cedar Rapids, conduction the services assisted by the members of the I. O. O. F. lodge of which he has been a member for over thirty years. His remains will be followed to their last resting place in the Oak Hill cemetery by a large concourse of s sympathizing friends. The floral offerings at the home yesterday were evidence of the high esteem in which the deceased was. held in this community.

When the remains arrived Sunday evening they were met at the depot by the members of the Odd Fellow Lodge and taken to the family home on east Main street where they are lying in state until the funeral tomorrow afternoon at the Presbyterian church.

GRAVES, Howard

HOWARD GRAVES PASSES TO REWARD
PIONEER AND HONORED CITIZEN DIES AT HOME OF DAUGHTER
TUESDAY NIGHT
FUNERAL FRIDAY AFTERNOON
NEARLY EIGHTY YEARS OF AGE

President of Estherville State Bank. Formerly State Representative
A Pure and High Minded Citizen
Commendable Character for Emulation

Estherville is in mourning over the death of one of its most highly respected and honorable citizens, Howard Graves, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jas. Espeset on south Eighth street at 11:30 o'clock Tuesday night, October 28th [1913], after only a comparatively brief illness.

Until a few weeks ago he was a conspicuous figure on the streets of this city and was a daily visitor at the office of the Estherville Abstract Co., of which he was president. He was also president of the Estherville State Bank and had been at the head of that institution for many years.

About two months ago his health began to fail and his decline was very rapid. There was no organic disease but simply a decline incident to old age and the wasted tissues refused to respond to stimulants or restoratives. Until the last his mind was bright and up to the final summons he was conscious and hopeful If he had lived until next January he would have been 78 years of age.

Funeral is to be held Friday afternoon from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Jas. Espeset, who is the only surviving daughter. There are no sons and his wife died about eleven years ago.

Estherville has never had a better citizen than Hon. Howard Graves and no one in whom the people had greater confidence. He was high minded; he lived a pure and exemplary life. His life was a benediction. He belonged to no fraternal organization. He was a home lover and had no desires for clubs or social prominence. His life was unostentatious; his death was peaceful.

Deceased was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, January 28th, 1836. Two years later he came with his parents, [Gaylord and Nancy Tuckerman Graves], and located in East Troy, Walworth county, Wisconsin, where his father engaged in farming and in the mercantile business. At this place the subject of this sketch received his primary education in the district school and also devoted much of his time on the farm and in his father's store.

In 1855 he came with his parents to Winneshiek county, Iowa, where the same avocations were pursued.

When 19 years of age Mr. Graves went to Freeport, Iowa, and five years later came to Emmet county where he has since resided. He engaged in farming and stock raising the first three years here, afterwards he was engaged in the mercantile business until 1871. His first store was constructed of logs and was located near the site of the Rick Island round house. He afterwards engaged in the real estate and banking business, having a private bank until 1887 when the bank was incorporated into a state bank, known as the Estherville State Bank, and has continued under that name ever since. It was the first bank established in Emmet county. He was elected to the state legislature from this district in 1870.

In 1857 he was united in marriage to Mary L. Blackman of Winneshiek county. Four children blessed this union, three sons and a daughter. The three sons died while young of a malignant disease, but the daughter, Mrs. Jas. Espeset is living, her home being in this city. A grandson, Mr. Howard Espeset, also resides here. Mrs. Graves died in 1902.

Mr. Graves accumulated a very comfortable fortune and had a magnificent home. He was thrifty and frugal and yet benevolent. No one in actual distress asked in vain of him. What he had he honestly earned. He had no enemies. His friends were as numerous as his acquaintances.
