  Population, 3,404, the judicial seat of Emmet county, is
an incorporated city located on the west  fork of the
Des Moines river and on the C., R. I. & P. and the M. & St. L. Rys.
(depots 700 yards apart), 22 miles northwest of Emmetsburg and
163 northwest of Des Moines. The city owns an up-to-date
electric light plant, furnishing all night street light service,
with arc lights in all parts of city, has an extensive water supply
and owns its water works plant, have 23 public hydrants for
fire protection, fire department excellent sewerage system, 14 miles
of cement sidewalk, 5 hotels, 30 fraternal orders, 11 churches
4 public school buildings, hospital, free public library costing $12,000,
fine park centrally located, 5 banks, 4 newspapers, large job printing
establishment and a book bindery, 2 creamery, supply factories,
roller flouring mills, cement block works, grain elevators, brick and tile
works, show case factory, ice plant, granite and marble works,
machine shops, telephone exchange, etc. It is a division point on
two railroads, the Rock Island pay roll being $30,000 monthly, has
12 passenger trains daily and its freight is delivered at 172 stations
on same day shipment is made, 2 round houses and machine shops.
