Captain Andrew J. Millard

Andrew J. Millard was born March 23, 1834, in New York State. He learned regimentation while at sea for 2 years. This taught him the need for training, discipline, and sacrifice to be a leader.

He came to Sioux City in 1856 to seek his fortune. Instead, he found need of his services to quell the frontier. In 1861 he was appointed Commander of the Sioux City Cavalry which he did in glorious fashion. He was General Sully's confidant which was rewarded by giving him the honor of driving the first stake when they built Fort Sully on the Missouri River the fall of 1863. He and Company I of the 7th Iowa Volunteer Regiment protected the Headquarters unit until their discharge in November, 1864, the end of their 3 year enlistment.

Mr. Millard became a mortician and served the Sioux City Community until his death October 4, 1894 at age 60.  Obituary.
