1850 Wagon Train from Des Moines County to California:

I recently found an article in the Burlington Hawkeye about the Flint River Wagon Train that left Des Moines County for CA in 1850.  Also found two articles on returning members of this Train in two 1851 editions of the paper.

I'd like to see if they company filed a charter at the courthouse in Burlington.  I'll be going there Nov 16.  Does anyone have any experience looking for this sort of document in the courthouse?  Would it be in a deed book in the recorder's office or is there a special book where corporation charters were filed?  Any other sugestions?

My 3d great grandfather, Sameul T. Saint and 4th great uncles Wm. and Ephrim Husted were on the Flint River Wagon train. William and Ephrim, and probably Samuel, lived in Yellow Spring Twp. during this period.

Traders Point, April 29, 1850.
Friend Edwards:--The company to which I belong, reside mostly in Des Moines County, and for the information of their friends, have decided to have tht names of the members published in the Burlington papers. We cross the river to day.—Every man , woman and child are in good health, and our teams look reasonably well. Nothing of importance here in the way of news—about as many teams arriving daily as are leaving. Corn is worth $2 per bushel—supplies of ery kind hae run up enormously high—flour is now selling at $12 per bbl. And side meat at 10 cts. Per lb. Up to this time but very little has been received by the river, expecting what has been shipped by emigrants for their own consumption. The early emigrants bought things at a reasonable rae, corn at 20 cts, and bacon at 6 1-4.
The name of the company is "Flint River," and the following are the name of the officers and men:
Z. C. Hovey, Captain; S. Hall Lieutenant; D. J. Sales, Ordersly Sergeant; Robert Grimes, Camp Master, E. Coad, Wagon Master.

Don,

I think that this guy was a little mixed up.  It looks like he should have sent his request to Des Moines County instead of Adams County.  Can you help him?

I have been  researching the NEUFNER name for a long time.
I have found some info about their  arrival  from Austria, and I see that they ended up in Burlington, However along the way I have lost several of Anton and Barbara Neufners children. And the only present contacts I can confirm are  myself, my late husband and his son. Anyone  know anything about the Neufners ?

Also if any in the Burlington area knew my husband  LYLE  EDWARD  NEUFNER, please contact me; would like to hear his Burlington stories !His dob was 2/17/1930.

Thanks for any help !

VANNEST

I am looking for a Grace Stella Vannest who was born in 1892-93 in Burlington to Grace Estella and James Vanest.  She married three times, Mueller, Balmer, then to a Charles A. Anderson.  There is a Charles A. Anderson in the 1930 census with wife Hulda.  He is 57.  They have children Mildred, Chester and Robert.  I am trying to find any Anderson with a connection to Burlington Andersons that might be able to help me locate where Grace is buried and if this Charles is the one she married.  She would have married him in the late 1930s or early 1940s.   Denise in Iowa

CHAMBERS SWARTZ

 Hi, Des Moines Co. researchers,

In trying to find my husband's grandfather in the 1920 census I see
that there is a 24-yr. old Herbert Swartz married to a 21-yr. old Vala
Swartz in Burlington, IA.  As Vala is an unusual first name I was able to
find her in the 1910 census and see that her maiden name is CHAMBERS.  It
seems Vala was the daughter of Harry F. Chambers and Nellie Chambers.

My husband's grandfather was Charles Herbert Swartz/Schwartz and went by
Herb; he should have been 23 on this census, not 24, but that's a slight
 difference.

Does anyone know more about this couple?  Did they move out of state?
Did one of them die at a young age?  Thanks.

DAHLBERG

Dear Sirs!

Pehr (Peter) Dahlberg and his wife Ingar are relation of mine. They arrived in Burlington, Iowa, 1845 with seven children and settled at what they called New Sweden. I have obtained some information about their settlement, but now when I am writing my family chronicle, I find that I lack some data of where they lived from time to time. I would be very glad if you would be able to direct me to where I can find such information.
I look forward to hearing from you
Yours sincerely

Surname: FRITZSCHE

Walter M. Fritzsche married Jemima Pickens 1 May 1862 in Henry County, Indiana.  I have been unable to find this family in the 1870 census, but they appear in the 1880 Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa census.  They are also in Burlington in 1900, as well as 1905, but not later.  They had 3 sons: William, Elias, and Ed.  I would appreciate any further information

Surnames: BRUMM, JACOBY, HALL

Hello and thank you!  Yes, I have been in close touch with Dennis and seen his website.  This is one Brumm he did not know about.  For the record, I have discovered a correct spelling of Ruth GeNell Brumm (1913-1975).  She married (1) Arthur Edward Jacoby (1908-1955) in Burlington, IA, and (2) Bernard Hall in Los Angeles County, CA.  GeNell and Arthur had a son named Jack Jacoby.  It is not clear whether or not the name "Jack" is his given name or a nickname.  He would have been born sometime between 1930-1943, probably in Burlington, Iowa.  I am seeking information on him as well.

Thanks.

Letha

Surnames: Steenrod, Lowry, Morrison

Chuck,
My gg grandmother was a Steenrod (married to a Morrison and then to a Lowry).  She was born in Muskingum, Ohio, remarried in Athens, Ohio, and moved to Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa around 1860 with her family.  By 1870, she was widowed (twice) and lived near her sister (married name Spry) and daughter (married name also Spry).  Other Steenrods from this family could also have moved to Iowa.  What information do you have about them?  The Steenrod book is on this web site if you want to try to find them (and haven't already).   I will be happy to exchange information with you if you are still looking.

Surnames: Payne, Payn, Paine, Pence, Burton

I'm looking for Edward Payne, born abt 1855 in Iowa. He and parents and sister were in Franklin, Des Moines, Iowa for the 1856 Iowa State Census.
Parents are William Payne born abt 1821 in Ohio? and married Mary Ann Pence (born 1832 in PA) in 1853. Edward was one of three children as far as I can tell all born in Iowa.
Adeline 1854
Edward 1855
Armilda Amanda 1859
Family records indicate Edward M Payne's birth date is Oct 14 1857 in Wapello, IA? But 1856 census shows he was 1 yr, so 1855 in Franklin, IA?
Edward married Elizabeth Ann Burton 7 Sep 1884 in Corning, Adams, Iowa. Can anyone do a look up on the marriage records for me? I am looking for any information on the Payne's. Where were they living at any time between 1856 and 1900? Names of the officiators and witnesses of the marriage if possible. Marriages or deaths of his sisters. I wonder if Edwards parents went separate ways and his mother remarried, so maybe the children have different names in the census records. Family records state his mother, Mary, died 1921 in Illinois, but has yet to be verified by me. Family records state his father, William died in Nampa, Canyon Co., Idaho, death date unknown, also not yet verified.

I do find Edward again in 1900 census in Boise, Idaho with his family. Wife Elizabeth Ann Burton, children: Wallace, Jessie, Eugene and Delmont.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!
