DES MOINES COUNTY, IOWA
QUERIES 2003
Looking for Maddox/Maddux who were in Des Moines Co in
1848-1850.
George Maddox married Sarah Hart 9 Jan 1848 and Martha Jane
Maddox married
John Jester 16 Jan 1849. Both George and Martha are the children
of Leonard and Jane Beauchamp
Maddox. Leonard and Jane joined the Mormon Church in abt
1840 in Tishomingo
Co MS and later moved to Nauvoo, Hancock, IL. When the
Mormons were run out
of Nauvoo, it appears that Leonard and Jane went to Des Moines Co
IA. (as
near as I can figure). I'm trying to document the deaths of
Leonard and Jane. Family stories have
it they died in Iowa. Since two of their children married
in Des Moines
County, I figured that's where Leonard and Jane were. They
apparently are
deceased before 1850 as I can not locate them on the 1850 census.
Leonard Maddux b 1770-1775 MD
Jane Beauchamp b 1790 MD
George Maddux b 1824 AL
Martha Jane b 1828 TN
1st Does anyone have any information on this family?
2nd Any possibilities where Leonard and Jane could be buried if
they died in
Des Moines Co ca 1844-1849?
Thanks

Is there any particular website for this, or would I need to contact the state vital records office? I thank you for your time; I can be reached at ericallen@gci.net. Sincerely, Eric Allen

THE STARVATION IN IRELAND
Dublin, Feb. 3- At a meeting of the
Mansion house committee, the lord
mayor referred to reports that three inquests had been held in
the
neighborhood of Parsonstown, wherein verdicts were rendered of
death from
destitution, and stated that no application for relief had been
received
from that district.
Dublin, Feb. 1- At a meeting of the
Mansion house committee last night,
Lord Mayor Grey presiding, it was announced that £23,000 had
been received
to date, and £15,300 disbursed. The chairman complained of the
attacks which
had been made in America on the constitution of the committee and
its mode
of distribution of the funds entrusted to it and read letters
from the Roman
Catholic Bishops McEvilly, of Galway and Dugan of Clonfert,
expressing
astonishment at these attacks, and declaring that the Mansion
house fund is
administered solely with a view to the relief of the distress,
and that the
committee enjoys the public confidence. Archbishop French, of the
church of
Ireland, was present and joined in these expressions. It was
announced that
the committee had received £3,000 additional from Sidney, making
a total
from the Australian colonies of £21,000.

I am looking for information about my great-great grandfather,
John Linn (b.
1833) who moved to Iowa from Sweden between 1870-1872. He was in
Union
Township by 1880, and was a farmer. His wife had died, but he had
five
children, Emma (b.1863), Charles (b. 1865), Theadore (b. 18670,
John (b. 1869)
and Edward (b. 1872). All were born in Sweden except Edward. My
grandfather
was Theadore, and he later moved to Detroit, Michigan by 1903. Is
some of the
family buried in the Swede Cemetery in Sec. 15 or were they moved
to the
Union/Linn Cemtery in Yellow Spring Twp.? Any help would be great
as I make
plans to come over from Michigan. Thanks!

I found in the 1880 Iowa census Des Moines county Walker
Zebulon 31, Wife Maud 18, Daughter Cora 6/12. The information I
have on my GGrandmother is Zora Ellen Walker born 1 Sept. 1887
birtplace Iowa, Religion Quaker, Father Zeb Walker dead age 65
heart trouble. Mother Maud.
Zora Married James Day Clark at the age of 14 in Carthage
Missouri when his first wife died in childbirth. Zora died May 22
1994 in Central Oklahoma State Hospital, she had dark hair, dark
eyes, and dark complexion, She had 5 children 2 boys and 3 girls.
My ancestor, Matilda Conner/Connor was married in DesMoines
County in 1843, before statehood, to Joseph Armstrong. I am
looking for her parents. Are newspapers available that were
printed then? Is it likely that she was married in
Burlington? Any other sources that I might check? I
suspect that the Conners may not have lived in the area for
long. She and her husband are in Missouri in 1850 and from
there I can track her until her death in CA about 1902. She
may have been born in Ohio about 1823. Her father was born
in Ireland, mother in PA. Any help or tips will be
appreciated.

I am researching Jemima Decker Westfall who married Isaac
Chandler in Des
Moines Co 1845. Her daughter Jane married A.J.(Andrew
Jackson)Smith 1847;
Daughter Nancy married Pleasant S. Trent 1839; Daughter Mary
married William
Goff 1840. All in Des Moines County.
Am specifically looking for death records for the above
individuals. Isaac and
Jemima died about 1879-1885. May be buried in Chandler cemetery.
Any sexton
records, etc?
Jane Westfall Smith prior to 1900 and AJ Smith after 1900.
Don,
I was interested in the McMaken reference. There was a
McMaken/Scott
intermarriage at one point. I have been researching the Scott
families in
Des Moines County for a long time. If you should have or stumble
across
anything about them (especially David SCOTT and Joseph Kilburn
SCOTT and
anything that tells how these two were related (for I think they
may have
been), I would be most appreciative!
I will look up the letters as soon as I get a minute.

Hi Carol,
This is probably not a direct link, but I have a Charles Hinson
married to
Fannie Brockway, 7/16/1885 in Burlington, Des Moines County,
Iowa. I am
researching the Brockway line, but I hang on to the names of the
parents. And
his parents are listed as Garret Hinson and Eva A. Bonton/Burton.
I am looking
for when and where Charles died and was buried. Any help is
appreciated.

also lived in Jefferson Co. in 1870, Van Buren Co., in 1880. I
have the rest of the family and this would make the family

I believe my gg-grandfather, James K.P. Liggett, died in
Burlington, IA. He was listed in the April 1910 census as
living with his daughter and husband. By 2/1/1911, his
ex-wife, Lena Lindgren, filed for his Civil War Pension for their
minor daughter. Family tradition says he died in the
Sailors and Soldiers home in Quincy, IL, but Adams County, IL has
no death record for him and the IL S&S home has no record of
him.
So, here are my questions:
Is there S&S home in the Burlington area?
Are there any death records transcribed from 1910-1911? (If
not, I will just send away for it, but I wanted to verify he died
there....in case he did move before then. I am also waiting
for his Civil War records, but I am impatient. This has
been a brick wall for quite a while and now I am ready to break
it down!)
Thanks for your help -
Carla
