Welcome to Iowa

Orphaned Family Treasures

Did you ever run across old family photos and think, "someone is looking for these?"

By posting your old photos here, you or others may gain a couple of possible benefits; someone may recognize someone in  the photos, and in so doing, break down a brick wall.

INTRODUCTION

Since 1998 these photos with text have been posted manually. This will continue until we can obtain an automatic query and photo posting system.

Finally, although these photos were found in various counties of Iowa, the people in the photos did not necessarily live in Iowa. We have found photos in Missouri of families in Iowa, and photos found in Iowa were of families who moved on to Oregon.

You can use the search engine to find photographs. Photos may be listed in the county found and not necessarily in the county lost.   Queries are marked as LOST or FOUND.

Here the most unusual graphic designs found on the backs of some photographs will be displayed.

Featured left is an eye catching bird design on reverse of photographic paper indicating the shop was in Ottumwa.

The photographer named J. M. Winn was located at 228 E. Main Street, Ottumwa, Iowa. His photographic business was started in 1876.

If you find another photo with a bird on the back, please let me know.
