Runes
The word "Rune" comes from the root word which means "mystery" or "secret". Examples of the use of this word can be seen in the Old Celtic word "run"The first runes in North Germany were carved, and not written. The art of writing did not come to Germany till the Christian Monks arrived in Germany. I will keep looking. Their is a lot on the web and at the library Luvs NormaNOTE: From the webmaster. Though Runes is a Germanic word, the traditions were celebrated in Scandinavia, worked it's way into Scotland via Celt influence, and to a lesser extent worked it's way to Ireland via the Scots migration to Ireland.
These inscriptions were mostly made in stone, but find them also on very old coins. Celts did not have a written language, so use of these characters are more like hieroglyphics than script.
More information on use of Runic Stones is solicited.
