This Cemetery sits within the City of Burlington on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. This is very old, very historic. It has a lot of broken and unmarked stones and stones that have made their eventual slide down the sides of the bluff. You can see headstones lying down the bluff as you look along the sides. As a side note, there are many references to this cemetery for burials within the Prugh records.

In that context, I offer portions of an article that appeared in the 17 Apr 1868 issue of the Burlington Daily Hawkeye newspaper:

"We were unable to obtain a complete statement of the Catholic Cemetery at the time we published the statistics and history of the Cemeteries of Burlington. The records of the Catholic Cemetery are incomplete. Some of them have been destroyed, and other parts too confused to make up a reliable exhibit. The grounds situated upon the bluff of the river in the northern part of the city, originally comprising ten acres, were bought in 1850 of a person named Bishop, a brick maker, who originally used the grounds for a brick yard. Bishop Lorenz, of Dubuque, bought the land in trust for the Catholic church, and paid $500.00. Unfortunately, the title proved defective, and after considerable litigation, the heirs, who resided in the Eastern states, donated two acres, the grounds now enclosed. This cemetery has been made the sepulchre of those who died in the faith of the Holy Catholic Church, in Burlington and adjoining towns and country, and nearly all its available space is occupied." [material omitted concerning the need for a new cemetery site] "The present grounds are neatly adorned with shrubbery, evergreens, flowers, mounds, tombstones, &c. C. O'Brien, Esq., has a beautiful family monument, erected at an expense of about $500. Rev. Father Donelan, of the Trinity Church on Third street, has also a fine monument. There were seventy burials in the grounds last year."

From this article it would appear that within 18 years of the purchase of the land for the cemetery, records were "incomplete" and "confused." It's no wonder that 145 years later it's still a problem. The entire article, above, is available on microfilm at the Burlington Public Library.
As you can understand from all of the above, there is a lot of discussion occurring as to who actually owns/is responsible for this cemetery. The last I heard, the Diocese of Peoria (in Illinois) actually owns this land. It seems that they are ready to disband and eliminate this cemetery. If you should find your family here, I would suggest that you make a trip as soon as possible to this site. It is quite a wonderful spot!!
