DES MOINES COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
Was founded in 1972 and celebrated its 30th year of service in 2002.
Meets in Burlington on the first Tuesday of every month at Midwest Federal Savings, at the corner of Roosevelt and Division streets, at 7PM.
Has transcribed Des Moines County records and other genealogically pertinent materials and published them through the Iowa Genealogical Society.
Provides research services for those searching for Des Moines County ancestors. For a copy of the Society's research policy write: DMCGS, P.O. Box 493, Burlington, IA 52601-0493.
Maintains a Genealogical Research Collection at the Burlington Public Library
THE DES MOINES COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Des Moines County Historical Society maintains three museums in Burlington:
The Apple Trees Museum located at 1616 Dill Street in Perkins Park is a general history museum. Open hours are 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm , Wednesdays & Sundays, May through Oct.
The Hawkeye Log Cabin located in scenic Crapo Park depicts pioneer life in this county. The cabin is open 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, Wednesdays & Sundays, May through September.
The Phelps House Museum located on Columbia street at the top of historic Snake Alley traces the histories of the Rorer, Garrett and Phelps families. Museum hours are 1:30pm to 4:30pm Saturdays and Sundays, May through October. Admission: $2 adults, $1 children.
Group tours of the museums are available by appointment. Contact the Society's office in The Apple Trees Museum Monday-Fridays 9am to 12pm all year-round, at 319-753-2449 Offices are closed on holidays.
The Society also retains a small collection of research materials consisting of county histories and atlases and selected vertical files which are available to researchers by appointment. Contact the society's office at 319-753-2449 for further information.
