Third Infantry

 

 

 

     

      The Fifth Regiment Infantry saw its first active service in front of New Madrid, when Companies A and B occupied the skirmish line. Did brilliant service in the operations against Island No. 10, and after its surrender were directed to inscribe “New Madrid” and “Island No. 10” upon its flag. At Iuka, September 19, 1862, the regiment lost heavily. During April and May, 1863 heavily skirmishing in Louisiana and Mississippi, and participated in the operations before Vicksburg. At Chattanooga, one-third of the regiment was captured. At Mission Ridge, the brave old Fifth was again on the skirmish line. Mustered out at Kingston, Alabama.
