STEVENS
Grandparent of Mrs. Leland (Mary) Nebel. Original name was
Steva and original home was W of Rockville in North Fork
Township. Later lived in Sec. 33 North Fork Township at site
of Vernon Becker farm.
VANDIVER,
Lucius Farmed SE
edge of Worthington. Was a lead miner near Dubuque before
taking his land claim. He lost his toes when his feet froze
during a hog drive in 1841.
KELLER,
Cyrus Died in
1846 after he mistakenly took a dose of saltpeter in place of Epson
Salts, teacher at Rockville log school.
LASCHER,
Jacob the last burial
in Rockville Cemetery. He lived on the farm now owned by
Richard Cook. He operated a small café in
Epworth.
WOLF farmed near Worthington. Great grandfather
of Ivan Wolf who had a photographic studio in
Dyersville.
WHEELIS, Mrs &
Children First wife of
A. B. Wheelis – a veteran of the Mexican War of 1848.
Wheelis’s farm was at the site of the Bob Besler farm on the
hill E of the intersection of X-49 and Worthington backtop
road. He had two more wives and families and retired in
Hopkinton.
GRAU great
grandparents of Elmer Fleckenstein. Lived at site of Mark
Klaren farm.
GALAHAN,
Jonas had the original
land claim at present site of Richard Cook farm and also sold the
site of Rockville to Oliver Olmstead. His daughter’s
wedding was the first in Dodge Township. James Dyer wrote
that Galahan was the first to die since Dyer came to the
territory.
HANKINS probably
the earliest burial in Rockville Cemetery.
HAM, Robert &
John came from
England. Robert worked at the Glen Tilt farm, (owned by
Ernest Hemmingway’s uncle, Randalls) as a herdsman for
cattle on the unfenced prairie. Brought 40 acres at SE
edge of Worthington, now part of the Kremer farm. Robert then
paid passage to bring his father, John from England. They
were the grandfather and great grandfather of Edith Polder.
Robert’s wife was Elizabeth Loyd who came from Wales.
She died soon after her son George was born and was buried in the
Loyd lot at Hopkinton.
HOUSE, Charles
& family
Charles was born in England and bought a farm W of Worthington just
N of the blacktop curve in the road. Two of their
children, John and Ann, never married and stayed on the farm
until they died. Another daughter, Sarah Wall lived at
Oneida.
RUDDELSDEN,
Charles owned the
Rockville site after 1850 and ran the flour mill. A daughter
married Charles Georgen. Their descendants lived in
Farley. A Georgen daughter, Anna G. Noonal taught at the
House County School, one mile W of Worthington. They lived on
a farm in N Fork Township.
TOOMER, William
& Sophia (Bisgrove) Came to America in 1849 and moved to Northfork
Township where they lived for over 50 years. Daughter Mary
Jane married Paul Lippert, founder of Lippert and then Kramer
Funeral Home in Dyersville. Another daughter, Elizabeth
married Wm Cooksley and resided NW of Worthington on
X-47.
HEWLETT,
Captain came to the
area with James Dyer SR. Lived in Rockville area. Some
family moved o southern Iowa.
