Joseph Hutchinson

     Joseph Hutchinson is one of the prominent men of affairs of Manchester and is interested in many of the business concerns of the county. He is connected with the Delaware County State Bank, the Manchester Flour Mills, the Manchester & Oneida Railway Company, and also has invested extensively in real estate. Most of his time is given to management of his financial interests but he is always ready to contribute to worthy public movements. He was born in London, England, on the 11th of May, 1852, a son of Henry and Elizabeth (Turner) Hutchinson. The father was a sea captain and emigrated to the United States in 1857, making his way immediately to Delaware County. He first engaged in merchandising and farming, but subsequently became a banker. His father John Hutchinson, resided at Sunderland, England, and was the owner of a shipbuilding yard.

     Joseph Hutchinson was educated in the high school of Manchester, Iowa, and after leaving school found employ ment as a clerk. He subsequently farmed for a time and then became cashier in the banking house of Henry Hutchinson, which position he held until the death of his father. Since then he has devoted his entire time to the care of his investments. He is the owner of the Manchester Flour Mills, is interested in the Manchester & Oneida Railway Company, of which he is director and president, and the Delaware County State Bank in which he is a director, and is an important factor in the successful management of those corporations. He has also invested to a considerable extent in farm lands. He manifests a laudable public spirit and has taken an active part in municipal government. For two terms he was a member of the council and president of the same and for six years was a member of the city school board, serving as president for three years of that time.

     Mr. Hutchinson was married at Charlotte, Michigan, August 13, 1890, to Miss Clara C. Thompson, a daughter of Charles G. and Elizabeth Thompson and a graduate of Michigan State Normal school. Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson have the following children: Arthur B., Elizabeth M., Josephine C., and Henry Robert.

     Mr. Hutchinson attends the Congregational church regularly and contributes liberally to its support. He is a republican in his political belief and gives his vote to the candidate of that party at the polls. Fraternally he belongs to the Masonic order, in which he has attained the Knight Templar degree, and also to the Eastern Star. He is identified with the business interests of Manchester and Delaware county in many ways and is justly accounted a leading citizen.
