Adolph
Becker, the period of whose residence in Delaware county
covers almost a third of a century, is a well known and
successful agriculturist who owns and operates an excellent farm
comprising one hundred and sixty acres on section 3, Coffins
Grove township. His birth occurred in Germany on the 2d of
January, 1872, his parents being Frederick and Maria Becker, who
were likewise natives of that country. They emigrated to the
United States in 1882 and made their way direct to Iowa, locating
on a farm in Delaware county and here spending the remainder of
their lives. The father passed away at the age of seventy two
years, and the mother was seventy nine years old when called to
her final rest. They were the parents of four children, as
follows: Mary, who is the wife of H. S. Tubbs; William, of
Lamont, Buchanan county, Iowa; Elizabeth, the wife of William
Rakow of Lamont; and Adolph, of this review.
The last named, who was a youth of ten years when he accompanied
his parents on their emigration to the new world, attended the
common schools in the acquirement of an education and when not
busy with his text books assisted his father in the operation of
the home farm. He remained thereon after attaining his majority
and subsequently purchased the property, which has since
continued in his possession and embraces one hundred and sixty
acres of rich and productive land on section 3, Coffins Grove
township. He likewise acquired twenty five acres of timber land
in Richland township. Mr. Becker has erected fine buildings on
his farm and has brought the place to a higher state of
cultivation and improvement. In connection with the production of
cereals, he makes a specialty of raising and feeding stock and in
both branches of his business has met with gratifying success.
In 1903 Mr. Becker was united in marriage to Miss Sadie
Kaltenbach, a native of Delaware county, Iowa, and a daughter of
Samuel and Mary (Morris) Kaltenbach. Our subject and his wife
have six children, namely: Harold, Fred, John, Gwendolun, Alma
and Jay. Mr. Becker gives his political allegiance to the
republican party and has ably served as school director, the
cause of education finding in him a stanch champion. Both he and
his wife enjoy an extensive and favorable acquaintance throughout
the community and are numbered among its esteemed and
representative residents. |
