Subject: Hickory Rocking Chairs sold at Reeves Grocery Store
Date: Monday, May 01, 2000 4:08 PM

I would like to locate and hopefully purchase a Hickory Rocking Chair handmade by my Great Great Grandfather Marion O'Neal. He sold the chairs at the Reeves Grocery Store in Pleasanton, IA around the turn of the century for $1 each. I have a photo of a chair so I would be able to authenticate an original. The chair would have great sentimental value and would become a cherished family heirloom.

Please contact me directly at chalmier@yahoo.com with any information you may have.

Thank you very much.

Thanks for posting this....now I have a question. My ancestors all settled in Decatur County, Eden Township, about 1853 and yet none of them are on the census.their names were CHASTAIN, ALLBAUGH, and allied families of WALTON, LAYTON, etc.

Has anyone else noticed their people "missing"? Thanks, Jan
Lund

Hi to all the List: Does anyone have the book "The Barefoot Preacher"? It is supposed to be about Abraham Snethen. I'd like to get a copy of it -- thanks for any help.

I know Iowa had 1856, and l925 state census. What other years did Iowa take census and are they available on microfilm? Thank you. I found several bits of information on the 1925, as the parents of each person are listed. Wouldn't that have been great if every census had asked that question.

Hi: I have read with interest the information on the cemeteries in Decatur County, IA. A few years ago, I contacted the county clerks office and after some correspondence received cemetery index and also a document showing stones and inscriptions for the High Point Cemetery. We were able then to take a trip there and take my husband's elderly mother and find the graves of many family members. We also discoved people that we didn't know about. The county clerk sent us maps of the township so that we could drive to the cemetery. In addition to the index for the High Point Cemetery, there is an index for the McAlister Cemetery and also one for the Trullinger Cemetery. The map also locates them. My husband Bennett family lived in the area for many years. We visited with distant cousins who are still located there.

According to the Handybook for Genealogists, 9th Edition, the state census for Iowa was in years,1847,1849,1851,1852,1853,1854,1856,1885,1895,1905,1915,& 1925 The territorial censuses for Iowa were 1836,1838,1844,& 1846, however copies exist for only a few counties. A few town censuses were taken in the 1880's & 1890's. Ask your local librarian about ordering these. Good luck, Lillie W.
