JAY LEROY TONEY
Jay Leroy Toney was born July 20, 1920 on the Red House Hill in rural
Decatur County north of Lamoni, Iowa. He was the second of three sons born
to Frank and Bertha (DeVries) Toney.
At the age of 18 months, Jay was rescued from the Red House by his mother
when it caught fire. A new house was then built about 1/8 mile away, where
he grew up on the farm. He went to school at the old Scott's School House.
He graduated from Lamoni High School in May 1937.
On December 18, 1938 Jay married Lela Gilliland. They had
two children, Janice Patricia born May 3, 1940 and Franklin Leroy born June
8, 1941. Jay went into the United States Navy in 1944 where he earned his
rank of Fireman First Class early in the summer of 1944. He was honorably
discharged on February 17, 1946. Jay and Lela were divorced in 1948.
On September 29, 1949 Jay married Ona May Purdun. They had two sons, Royal
Lee born June 11, 1950 and Julian Jay born April 19, 1952. Jay graduated
from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa in the spring of 1949 with a Bachelor
of Science degree.
In the summer of 1962 Jay proved his athletic ability by winning the Iowa
State Legion Bowling Championship. In 1963 he and his partner Wendell Plym
won the Iowa State Legion Doubles Championship.
When Ona May died October 6, 1991 they owned 3 farms, half an auction house,
2 acreages and a home at 425 N. Walnut in Lamoni free and clear.
For the past few years, Pansy Rinehart provided him with many hours of
caring friendship. During his lifetime, Jay enjoyed farming, raising cattle,
and deer and pheasant hunting. His association with the Purdun family over
the past 45 years--playing and working together-gave him great joy. Jay
always enjoyed Toney and DeVries family reunions.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife Ona May; and brother Thurman
Jerome Toney.
Survivors include his 4 children: Janice Brady and husband Michael of
Toledo, Ohio; Frank Toney and wife Sarah of Scottsdale, Arizona; Royal Toney
and wife Jenny of Blue Springs, Missouri; and Julian Toney and wife Anita of
Lamoni, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother Gerald Toney
and wife Juanita of Carlisle, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, August 6, 1996 at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill
Cemetery in Lamoni, Iowa with Joe DeBarthe, Bill Ballantyne, Dale Killpack
and Jon Barney officiating. Military honors were given by American Legion
Post #51 of Lamoni. Arrangements were made through the Slade O'Donnell
Funeral Home of Lamoni, Iowa.
