On the l7th inst. WASHINGTON TOMASON breathed his last and was interred
on the l8th, in the Woodmansee Cemetery, where the funeral obsequies
were held.  PHILO SHEPHERD officiating.  WASH, as he was familiarly
known, was born in Scott County, Kentucky, about l820.  When but a child
he was brought to Clinton County, Missouri, where he remained until the
Emancipation Proclamation left him his own master.  He soon after joined
the Union forces and remained in active service until his discharge in
l865.  He then located near Garden Grove, where he lived until he
purchased the property in this township, where he resided at the time of
his death.

He had often been urged to apply for a pension but refused with the
remark, that the government had already given him his liberty and he
could support himself the remainder of his life.  He had been twice
married, his last wife and eight children are still living.  A daughter
from Des Moines, who was born in Slavery, was with him when he died.
