Date: Tuesday, July 03, 2001 4:03 PM

Decatur County Journal

May l0, l900

JOHN R. TRUITT was born in Kentucky, March 5th, l8l9, and died at the

home of his son, MARION TRUITT, in this city Monday morning, May 7th,

l900. He moved to Indiana about l840 and married NANCY LEIGH, who died

in l848. To this union were born three children; MARY ELIZABETH, an

infant sister and MARION TRUITT who now survive him. In l849 he married

LUCINDA J. STOKES who died in September, l850, after their removal to

Iowa. To their marriage six children were born, of whom the following

are living: MILFORD F., LUCINDA F., SARAH A. and THOMAS N. TRUITT. For

many years deceased was a member of the Methodist Church but in his last

years was not united with any denomination, although from words to his

children during his last years and sickness, it is known that he still

held to his early faith in the life to come.

The funeral services were held by the Rev. W.H. Ilsley, of the

Presbyterian Church, at the residence, after which the remains were laid

at rest in the Hall Cemetery in Woodland Township. Thus has passed away

a man ripe in years whose form and face we shall see no more on earth.

Though poor in this world's goods he was rich in all those qualities

which constitute true manhood. He was an honest, temperate,

industrious, loyal and patriotic citizen. During his long life he

witnessed various changes in the history of his country. He was a

pioneer who belonged to the log cabin days of fifty years ago. May he

rest in peace.
