Subject: OBITUARY - PETER CARTWRIGHT STEWART.

Date: Thursday, August 02, 2001 8:37 PM

Decatur County Journal

May 28, l903

PETER CARTWRIGHT STEWART was born in Robinson County, Tennessee, July l,

l8l9, and died at his home near Leon, Iowa May l3, l903, aged 82 years,

l0 months and l2 days.

In the passing away of this venerable citizen, Decatur County loses one

of her oldest citizens, a man universally loved and respected, and one

who has materially helped in developing this county. He was kind and

generous, and no man ever appealed to him for aid without being given a

respectful hearing, and many of our best people owe their present

prosperity to his timely assistance in years gone by.

In l828 with his parents, he moved to Macoupon County, Illinois, and

when he was l9 years old emigrated to Jackson County, Missouri, soon

after moving to Andrews County, in the same state, where on August l5,

l843, he was united in marriage to HARRIET ELIZABETH ROBERTS, who

survives him after nearly sixty years of married life. To their union

were born thirteen children, six boys and seven girls. Two sons and two

daughters have preceded the father to the great beyond, leaving the aged

wife and nine children to mourn the loss of a true husband and a kind

and indulgent father.

In March, l85l, UNCLE PETER came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Center

Township where he lived until his death. He was one of the foremost men

in the early days of the county, and when the county seat was moved from

Decatur City to Leon in l852, UNCLE PETER hauled the records over from

Decatur City with his yoke of oxens.

The deceased united with the Baptist Church of Leon in l858 and for some

years was an ardent worker in the cause of the Master. The funeral

services were held at the home on Friday afternoon, May l5, at 3 o'clock

conducted by Rev. F. Edwards, of Oscaola, interment being in the Leon

Cemetery.

Of his posterity there are living 37 grandchildren and l0 great

grandchildren.
