Subject: DEATH OF MRS. JOHN STALEY

Date: Friday, October 12, 2001 8:13 PM

Decatur County Journal

November 2l, l907

WELDON NEWS: MRS. JOHN STALEY died at her home in Smyrna Saturday

morning, of blood poison, caused by accidentally running a pin in the

palm of her hand. She was sick about two weeks. The funeral was held

at the U.B. Church, just across the road from her late residence, Sunday

morning. Several were in attendance from Weldon and report it as being

a very large funeral. MRS. STALEY will be remembered as being

postmistress at Smyrna for several years before the rural free delivery

route was established, at which time the office was discontinued. She

still kept a small general store there up to the time of her death.

Her mother, MRS. COPPOCK, who had made her home with her for several

years, was taken to the insane asylum at Clarinda since her daughter was

taken sick. Truly misfortunes seldom come singly.
